Molay1292 Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Hopefully they are better in your area than they are in ours. You could put both of these stores together and still not have much, unless you are looking for $12 socks and $65 sweatshirts. 12 Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted July 1, 2016 Super User Posted July 1, 2016 My experiences with them are the same as Molay... Quote
wnspain Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 I never go to Dick's unless I'm aware of something they have on sale. The local Academy sporting goods is ALWAYS cheaper and they offer a better selection. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted July 1, 2016 Super User Posted July 1, 2016 Our SA was never very good, and for a while, was the only game in town until DSG showed up. We frequently shop at DSG and have scored some incredible deals over the years. No Academy here, either. But I've heard great things. Quote
Penguino Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Great for New Jersey, as we have a wide assortment of Dick's and Sports Authority. Their essentially the only local place you can buy fishing stuff, other than wally world, as the Bass Pro that was "supposed" to go up in Atlantic City keeps on getting delayed. Dick's has always had a much bigger fishing (and clearance) section that SA, so it should help SA get more fishing gear and much better deals. Quote
Super User burrows Posted July 1, 2016 Super User Posted July 1, 2016 So who's buying off sports chalet since they are going bankrupt they were number one back in the day? Quote
Catch 22 Posted July 1, 2016 Author Posted July 1, 2016 Years ago Dicks considered a segment of their business to target female buyers only. But for some reason it didn`t fly? I think it had something to do with the name We have but one Dicks store within my range and they really don`t see me there much, but I wish them the best. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted July 1, 2016 Super User Posted July 1, 2016 All I can say is thanks to my local Sports Authority for the 50% off going-out-of-business sale. 1 Quote
blckshirt98 Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 All of my local SAs got rid of their fishing departments a couple of years back. The closest Dick's is about 45 minutes away, but they have much better fishing sections than SA ever had. Quote
Neil McCauley Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 The shelves are lined with row after row of garbage and any lure or tackle item that's worth buying is always out of stock. The hottest color of every productive lure, always gone. But 47 other colors and sizes. It never fails. I remember a documentary about retail beer marketing and the tactic stores use of using the shelves themselves as advertisements by lining up 20 different types of basically the same crappy beer. You look at the shelves and it's a never ending wall of bud, but light, bud light lime, bud ultra, bud premium, bud, bud, bud..... Same stupidity goes on at Dick's with fishing gear. /rant 1 Quote
CarlF Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 The sports authorities in my area have been going out of business..I wonder if Dicks is trying to revive them? Quote

They probably carry 100 rods, none of which I would ever use. The only decent stuff they carried was some gammy and VMC hooks and some decent braid, all of which was wiped out long before the sale got to the point it was worth buying them. I did score on some shoes and boots that I needed though. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted July 1, 2016 Super User Posted July 1, 2016 They basically bought their mailing list, IP and the brand name for more or less pennies on the dollar. They're not keeping Sports Authority in business. They're taking over the lease on some of the stores (not all) to perhaps explore options of conversion to DSG, but by no means are they going to operate a brick and mortar Sports Authority. That ship has sailed or sank, however you want to look at it. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 3, 2016 Global Moderator Posted July 3, 2016 I can buy about the same gear at Wal Mart as I can at most of the DSG in my area. I suppose that's a product of having 2 BPS, 3 Academy Sports, Cabela's, and 2 local tackle shops within an hour's drive of the KC metro. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted July 4, 2016 Super User Posted July 4, 2016 I bought a kayak for my daughter at Dick's. But only because I had a gift card and they never had the spinning combo I wanted to buy, though it was on their site. I didn't want to mail order and pay shipping. Other than that, there's an Academy right down the street. If that's not good enough, there's a Cabela's 10 miles up the interstate. Quote
scatterbrains Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Meh whatever still won't get my money dicks can die off and it'd be no loss to me. Sports authority was a joke lots of fishing hunting on their website nothing in their store. Most items were ship from warehouse so the store had no stock, least that's how the one by me was. Quote

Super User bigbill Posted July 5, 2016 Super User Posted July 5, 2016 My local SA wasn't into fishing that much. The last time I was there they had a sale on shad raps. "Years ago" I hope that Dicks can change that. To promote fishing they need to go all out. Quote
