How often should I be changing this out? I have more then I could possibly need for a year. But I leave my polls in the back of my truck and they get hit with sun, heat, and occasionally rain if I didn't know it's gonna rain.

The mono has gotten all curly due to being wrapped up in my spinning reel, don't think that's really effecting anything but I'm not completely sure.

If this is how you store your gear on a regular basis, I am going to say you need to change it very often.  If you don't take a little better care of that gear there will be a day when it won't take care of you.

Direct sunlight and heat will degrade the performance and strength of your mono filament line. If you have those memory coils in your line it will rob you of any slack line sensitivity on bottom contact and weightless presentations.

I change my mono line fairly frequently (like once a month) because it is relatively inexpensive compared to all the other fishing gear I "have to have". :)    ...  I just ship my old line off to the Berkley Recycling Center every so often.

Sounds like the solution is to take a little better care of your gear!

This. I couldn't imagine leaving my gear out over night. I bring all my stuff inside after every trip, and it gets stored in my fishing walk-in closet. Yeah it sucks having to carry through the house several times a week, but I have far too much invested in my gear to not take care of it. And when stored right, monofilament will last a long time. I have a few spools of Big Game that have been stored in this closet for several years, and I'm still using the line this year. Hasn't degraded a bit.

mono will last a long time, im talking years and still be very strong, IF STORED PROPERLY. i would suggest you dont leave your gear laying around in the back of your truck all the time. not only will it affect your line, but the heat may affect the grease and oil in your reels causing it to "run" inside the reel, leaving less on the parts that depend on it.

its your money/line and you can do what you want with it, but you really dont need to change it that often. only reason to change it that often is if your reel is low on line, or you just want to try a different brand or size of line. otherwise, it seems rather wasteful to me. look at it this way, in the end if youre really changing it that often, is it really that much cheaper in the end? youre using more of it at a faster rate than you may use braid or FC...

Has nothing to do with expense, has to do with the cover items encountered in tidal water and what that will do to line. Not a fan of flouro period and braid will not hold up for half a trip.

Try pitching a jig around this stuff for 30 minutes.

I fish 6-8 times a month so I change line every other trip, sometimes every third trip if I anit fished heavy cover.

I look at it this way, the weakest link between me & the bass is my line. I re-tie often, re-spool often, & store properly!

you mentioned expense yourself, i didnt just bring it up out of the blue.

and correct me if im wrong, if youre fishing current/tidal water, i imagine your line stays pretty tight with the water flow, with only a little actually laying on the bottom or contacting stuff on the bottom. so i picture very little line actually getting frayed/damaged even with a weight. seems to me you could just strip off several feet and still have plenty of line left to fish. maybe my speculation is wrong on that part, im not sure. i guess i hadnt considered factors like how much line your reel spools hold, size of the line, or how often you may fish, but thats only because you mentioned the expense part of it and none of that...carry on...

Stop leaving it in the car.

My friend leaves a bunch of cheaper combos in his boat with the cover on. He uses Big Game mono and changes several times a year. I've left a couple rods leaning against the wall right over baseboard heaters and it made the line brittle. Wild temp fluctuations will affect mono. But if you change that line to braid, you'd have no problem using it for 2 years or more.

I change my mono maybe twice a year.

Keep mono out of the sunlight when not in use, and always use KVD Line and Lure to make it more manageable.

I always change my line in the spring, I'm just a weekend fisherman, and my gear is stored in the garage when I'm not fishing, but I've noticed after a years worth of abuse it starts getting a little brittle. If you're leaving it out in the weather constantly, I'd change it often.
