2-piece Custom Rod

Hi,

While searching for my ideal 2-piece casting rod, I thought about going custom for the first time. I tried researching brands that do so, but I couldn't find anything. I contacted Kistler, but he told me the blank (its length to be more precise) I was looking for is really hard to find ("does not exist").

The specs for my rod would be:

- 7'2" lenght, center cut

-fast action

-sensitive blank like the one used by Kistler (I don't know much about this topic tbh)

-cork grip preferably  (split or full doesn't matter)

-techniques: jigs (3/8oz usually), chatterbait (3/8oz), pitching (1/2oz tungsten weight), frogs. Not too heavy cover.

I would like to keep this between $300-350. The rod that fits my criteria the closest is the new Poison Adrena, but if I can get a custom rod at that price, I'd rather go with the latter.

Any help or recommendation would be awesome.

If you want a custom 2 piece to adequately handle a half ounce, you'll need a blank with a minimum of 500 grams of power. Rod Geeks has a 2 piece 7 footer in the Carbon 2 line. A medium power I believe, but I don't know if it will handle a half ounce. Mhx has 2 piece blanks in the standard line. The Sj843 would make a good blank for what you want. With either blank I can tell you you won't get the same transmission feedback as you find with any North Fork composites blanks. Even the one's Kistler uses. There are no high quality 2 piece blanks on the market. Not any that would rival Kistler or that Poison Adrena anyways. I have a 2 piece mhx Sj842 and it gets the job done.

Thanks a lot for this. Isn't the SJ843 a spinning rod blank? I think Kistler had a 2-piece blank, but it didn't match what I was looking for.

The other thing I was considering was buying a 1-piece rod and ask a rod builder to make it into a 2-piece, but this would void the warranty...

It doesn't matter if the blank is labeled spinning or casting. It knows no difference. Finding the right blank for the task at hand is key in terms of pulling power, tip speed, and flex characteristics under load. If you go custom make sure you get the exact blank you want that will meet all these requirements and also accommodate your preferences and fishing style. The Sj843 is a very, very fast blank. The MB843 will be a little slower but still fast. DVT is the guy you want if you go the custom route. I would also talk to him about spiral wrapping. It's amazing. If you're wanting that Jdm taper like the Adrena has, or a little on the slower side of fast like the Kistler I'd recommend the MB843, though it will still be noticeably faster in nature, similar to a Loomis. The nice thing about a custom is having the rod built right vs mass production will bring out the full potential of the blank. And of course you can have it exactly how you want. DVT will do a fine job in accomplishing all this.

if you wouldn't mind a three-piece rod , Phenix makes a nice one in a built rod or you could buy the blank , they have a 7' MH / F rated 3/8-1 oz. the rod is around $300 and comes with a felt lined hard case . the blank goes for $129 . heres a pic of the built rod and a link

Thanks for the help. I will do some more research for the blanks since there's still a lot of things I don't know.

I read great reviews about the Phenix rod blanks, but some people mentioned it's more prone to breakage... If I were to use it for dorados in Argentina, I'm worried it might break.

I love Phenix blanks. Never had an issue. The gen 1 Recon blanks had some issues. Don't believe all the garbage you read on the Internet.

if you're gonna be using the rod for dorado's , you might look into in inshore rod , not a bass rod !

maybe look into a heavier powered rod with a soft tip , a rod only rated to 1 ounce lure rating is generally a medium heavy bass rod . an inshore rod rated 1-3 oz. is more what you should be considering ...

Oh my mistake, I should have clarified that the ones we usually catch are less than 6-7lb, and we mainly target wolf fish. However, it's not unusual to hook a dorado while looking for the latter species.

From my experience, wolf fish and bass are very similar in terms of their behavior, fight, and how to fish them, so a bass rod works great. A small dorado runs more for sure, but a bass rod handles this well enough. My friend had no issues with a Veritas MH. I have a 2 piece Fenwick 6'6" Heavy action for the big ones; I just wanted something lighter and longer.
