Who else uses crankbait rods for chatterbaits?

This morning, in a rush to the lake, I THOUGHT I tied in my Strike King Pure Poision onto my 7'1" MH Duckett White Ice, which is my typical "bladed swimjig" rod. I get to the pond and take a first cast and realize that I tied the PP onto my 7' Medium White Ice crankbait rod. I was furious at myself, but decided to keep fishing anyway.

It wasn't bad at all, as I wound up landing three bass in about 45min, which were the only 3 bites I had. I started thinking that maybe this system could work.

I had 15lb hi seas fluoro-coated line, but figured I could up it to either 20lb FC, or maybe even 30-50lb braid if I couldn't get good hook sets in. I know guys on tour like Brett Hite use a heavy-action glass rod and 20lb fluoro:

Does anyone else use a similar system?

I do. Seems like a waste of money to me to have a different rod for the two. They are very similar.

I use a bass pro shops crankin stick 7' medium heavy for crankbaits along with chatterbaits and spinnerbaits. Works great with 10-12lb sufix siege

I can see where that would work. I have always preferred a fast action tip for anything with a single hook. I usually end up using my shakey head rod

A chatterbait is fished basically like a crankbait - I use a Phenix X3 glass rod with 20# fluoro for my chatterbaits and it works great!

So this past weekend I took my kayak out to Clear Lake. Pretty much all my fish came on a chatterbait. Here were my observations:

- initially had the chatterbait tied to my trebled baits rod: a 3-powered mod-fast graphite rod paired with 6:4 reel with 40lb braid with 12lb mono leader.

- hook up ratio with that setup was god awful.

- switched the chatterbait to my frog rod, dobyns 735 with 65lb braid and landed almost all

- I'm thinking because I was fishing sitting down, and wasn't able to get the leverage of a full hookset that the heavier setup compensated for this.

I like & use vibrating jigs quite a bit and have worked through a few different rod & line combinations looking for what I thought was most effective for me.

 And yes, I have settled on a QUANTUM TOUR KVD SIGNATURE SERIES TKVD746MA 7'4" MEDIUM HEAVY CRANK BAIT ROD with either 40 or 55lb Diawa Samuri Braid.   Same rig I go to for rattle baits in the grass. Allow for excellent casting distance, decent sensitivity and "Slow" enough" that I'm not setting up too early on striking fish.  Also I can still snap it out of the grass sufficiently to clean it off.

I use a 7"6" crankbait rod 12lb line.

I'll throw chatterbaits and spinnerbaits on one of two rods. A Champion 705CB and a Veracity 7' MH-F. Both rods work great for this application, but the 705CB is obviously a much slower rod. I prefer the Veracity because I can feel any time I get weeds on the bait, and I can rip the weeds off the bait easier.

7'2" MH/Regular Zillion Glass with 15lb flouro for me .  I don't like the glass rod for spinnerbaits, but it's awesome for chatterbaits IMO.

This Zillion MH is rated closer to many other Heavy powers, 1/2 to 2oz.  It's very similar rating-wise to the Evergreen rod Hite uses...Which is why I decided to try it initially.

Tried it, hated it, went back to what worked for me. 

A bladed jig with a big single hook, is not like a treble hooked crankbait except the 2 are moving baits IMO. Pushing a big single hook through the tough mouth of a big bass requires more backbone, which it seems to me is compensated for with the longer rods or braided line a lot of guys in the crankbait rod camp opt for. I can't subscribe to the thought of needed the slower rod to avoid pulling the bait away from the fish. If a bass wants to eat one, no way you could reel too fast or rip it away from them.

I'm certainly no B.Hite, but I've caught a few fish on bladed jigs myself. If they want to eat it, they're going to eat it.

For me personally, it's not about pulling the bait away from the fish since I don't really subscribe to that theory either.  IMO the bait behaves differently on the glass rod...No scientific evidence to back it up, just what I see/feel on the water.  For some reason chatterbaits move through and shed the thick/heavy/sloppy grass we have on our tidal rivers here much better on the glass rod, in my hands anyway....

I actually hate glass rods in general so I wouldn't use it if it didn't make a difference for me .

Was in the yak yesterday with just one MH rod, which had a frog tied on.  So I threw a smallish chatterbait on a M.  Missed a lot more than I landed; and far more than I ever missed with that MH.  Never again for me.

I'm fairly similar to A-Jay on this one.  I throw my chatterbaits on a Loomis 855C (MH).  I also use it for traps 1/2oz+.  I have 30lb DSB on mine.

The Evergreen rod that Brett Hite uses for chatterbaits is not exactly your average crank bait rod. It's a composite rod that's sort of graphite tip and midsection with a glass butt. There's a material change like two thirds of the way down the blank. It's weird.

I fish quite a bit from a canoe and although not quite as light as a kayak, hook sets into decent fish still routinely move me & the boat toward the fish.  This really does seem to "absorb" quite a bit of the end of line hook setting power which if left uncompensated for can result is less fish making it to my net. 

With the possible exception of Finesse presentation like a standard drop & split shot rigs,  and regardless of the rod type / composition (glass, composite or graphite) Braided line has helped quite a bit as the no stretch property of the line transmits the immediate hook setting power right to the hook point, then it's a matter of reeling like a mad man to keep the line tight. 

I'm in a new boat this season and this stuff is pretty much a none issue.  I'll admit to liking that.

I throw chatterbaits on a klx mh/mf crank rip twitch which has the same blank as the buzz blades rod.
