GobbleDog Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 Good to hear so many folks like their Mercury. From the sounds of this thread, they make some quality motors! Quote

Big-Bass1055 Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 I have a Merc 90 and I love it! My father just purchased a new Honda, and had to return itbecause it would never run right. He was then given a new Honda and first time out he hat to be towed in because the lower leg almost fell off. Quote
texasbass1 Posted July 29, 2005 Posted July 29, 2005 I run an XR6 and love. My last motor was a Yamaha and it ran for 18 yrs with 2 rebuilds. But Glenn is correct about Merc using Yamaha powerheads, particularly in their 4 strokes. Merc sued Yamaha for dumping (it was reported on Bass Resource earlier this year.) But the ITC didn't find any evidence. Either motor will give you years of reliability. Quote
Pa Angler Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 I have a 2004 90HP ELPTO 2 stroke on a Tracker Targa 17SC did have a little trouble with in the first month seems somehow the intake and carb gaskets started leaking air and caused some performance issues Merc fixed the problem right a way haven't had any problems since. Eagle Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 Ok, here ya go, As far as dependability..Both will give you good dependability...but I can tell you one thing That I see in the 150 calls I take a day is the primary reason for most failures are...FUEL, Water Pressure, and most of all INPROPER SET UP... Now, as far a Yamaha and Mercury...We supply and have supplied the following motors..F75-F115 and F200-F225..The contract will be up in April 2006 and at this point there will be no negotiations..We have realized what kind of business practices they have and I believe we dont and wont go down that road. They stated that we are hurting their business and the industry but they turned around and bought a couple thousand transoms with the purchase of Lund, Lowe, and Crestliner, then Triton. Now, I have a question...How did we hurt them so bad that they went out and spent millions of dollars to buy these transom...I just dont understand..heck when I an financiaaly strained I cant buy anything... Thank You, Eagle Quote
Madhouse27 Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 I am currently running a 1968 Mercury 500 (50hp). The thing is almost as old as I am and still goes like hell. It's got a great old school look about it with the silver Kiekhaefer face plate and certainly has that Mercury growl. I did have to have the starter rebuilt this season, 36 years of turning the merc over had finally done it in. I know ownership and some things have changed at Mercury over the years but if what they are turning out now is half as tough as my old beast I'll be running a Merc on my new rig. Quote
Wabassin Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 I have a mercury from 1987 and it still runs great all I have had todo is change the seals (spelling?) on it and it always starts and runs great. Quote
Cujo Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 i have a 1970, 20hp merc and she is still running. i think that says alot. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 25, 2005 Super User Posted August 25, 2005 I had two problems with my 2003 Merc 50 HP. First, according to the repair shop, the water pump was not fastned correctly and it came lose tearing itself all to pieces. Cost $685 to replace. Then, the motor stuttered and spit while in neutral or low speed and the Merc dealer told me that the idle was out of wack. Now, did the first dealer mess up the idle? I guess he had to as the motor ran beauifully before he replaced the water pump. Cost of idle adjustment $85. The Merc runs beautifully now. I like to turn around while having the motor running at full speed to watch the water spray and wake. Simply beautiful. Of course I do this on an open lake or stretch of water so I don't crash. I grew up with Evinrudes and we could not kill them no matter how hard we tried so I will stick with the Mercury engines. Quote
