BigJones24 Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 This question has a simple answer I have no doubt but being a newbie I haven't been able to find it. Is there a post about properly removing the hook so that the fish can be unharmed when releasing back into the water? Also, what about holding fish? The main fish in my area are bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish. Is there any guidelines on how to hold particular fish? I must immediate I was extremely skeptical of sticking my thumb in the mouth of my first bass I caught today like I see you veterans do so I held it from underneath while I pulled the hook out and then released him. BadContrakt Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Hold them by the mouth, but don't bend their jaw in a way you wouldn't want someone bending yours. After pulling in a few healthy bass and "lipping" them you'll get the sickness. It's called "Bass Thumb" When they squirm around when you're holding them by the mouth (and removing the hook), their lip pads chew up your thumb. Wear it proud my friend! Wear it proud. Quote
TxHawgs Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 I hate hate it when these guys crank their jaws like that and anything over 3 4lbs in my book needs it's ass supported. Texas lost a cpl share lunkers recently from broken jaws. That and the cool new thing too do palm striking the jig out of the fishes mouth, can't stand that either. 1 Quote

A guy I was fishing with took my bass (my pb) and picked it up, basically lipping it, while making a fist under its jaw and cranked her to a 45 degree angle really ticked me off, when the fish was in the water she had a hard time closing her mouth, like I told him, it's a shame she will die because he didn't have the courtesy to hold her correctly. Try to treat the fish gently, no point in harming them if your putting them back in. Quote

Seriously? Watch how gentle the pros on MLF are with the fish. The only reason they don't flop them on the deck is because 2 min penalty. The rip the hook out weight it, jack it in the air so spectators can see and chuck them back. They are bass not newborn babies. People get all bent out of shape about how people handle fish. If you raking gills, scraping off scales or cracking jaws that's one thing. Everything else is cool or else you'd see dead fish all over the lake. Most people probably don't handle their own kids as gently as the precious bass. It's a joke. Quote

This is all coming from the same guy who I'm sure sets the hook on fish like Tiger Woods on a par 5. You want to snuggle and hug the fish you just ripped half its face off, be my guest. I grab them however the situation dictates, if that be with a fist under the jaw, so be it. I've never cracked a fish's jaw and never left a hook behind. Super User Further North Posted July 12, 2016 Super User Posted July 12, 2016 I use a fly fishing net on the boat (I keep one in a forward compartment, and another aft) to scoop the bass out of the water. After that...it's easy to unhook them and get them back in the H20 without getting hooked...and I don't handle the fish, which is good for them also. 1 Quote
