My company is giving us one Friday off each month in the summer and today was mine.  Went to a local department of conservation area and rented a Jon boat. I had my day all planned out but the fish were not cooperating at all. After two hours, I grabbed my wife's Mojo Bass which I always have set up with a Ned rig.  I just wanted something, but ended up getting my biggest fish of the day.....3 ounces shy of the four pounder I told the wife I was hunting today.

The fishing Gods smiled and I ended up with fourteen more bass, a crappie, a bluegill and a two pound catfish.  Sunny as can be but I love throwing top water and the Whopper Plopper got six of them. Two on a jig, one on a frog (three misses on a frog too. Need some practice) and the rest on the Ned rig.

I wish I could catch fish on a Ned, good for you.

You can. Matter of fact, I can't think of a better bait to teach people how to concentrate more on subtle movements than the "hit", but it is a learning process and like any bait, presentation is the key.

For example, yesterday I just had a couple of hours to spend and was getting nothing.  If I don't get hit in an area, before I leave it, I toss the Ned as a last resort.  I was getting nothing on the Ned until I changed my technique to swim it over grass.....something I'd never done with the Ned.  I got five LMB in the last twenty minutes of my day.  None of them nailed the bait. It was all very subtle line movements.

If I had the skill, I would love to make a video where the line is enhanced to show just how little line movement is sometimes involved.  It will sharpen your skills overall because you will start to react to things you wouldn't have before with other baits too.

I tried to edit but couldn't so I need to clarify.  I was swimming it over the grass, but still allowed for the occasional pause to allow it to drop, which is when they hit. I never let it drop into the grass and was putting a lot more time into the swim portion than I ever have before.  When I tried my normal Ned methods, they were not working. The fish wouldn't touch any other baits but for some reason, but wanted a more aggressive Ned presentation with more movement.

Week that's the joy of living in Missouri, over about six pounds are fairly elusive. That's my yearly PB and it should be upped here in the next month or so.  I'll reset it again in 2017......unless I get something too good not to brag about.

Nice day! Funny how you keep hearing detractors saying that the Ned rig isn't a big fish bait. I wonder what they consider a big fish?

If you think the Ned Rig doesn't catch big fish, take a look at the one I caught on it in this video:
