DrePac3000 Posted June 23, 2016 Posted June 23, 2016 I have lost 2 lures due to my line snapping while casting, I use 14 lb Berkeley triline extra smooth casting . Is my line breaking because it is not quality or could it be that I'm not using heavy enough line or what? If so is there any other monofilament that is not to expensive that you would recommend? Thanks Quote
Chance_Taker4 Posted June 23, 2016 Posted June 23, 2016 Is it your line breaking or your not breaking? Also are you checking your line consistently for any type of damage? With mono you have to cut and retie a lot due to its lack of abrasion resistance. I use Triline Big Game which is another cheap mono with no problems. 1 Quote
Outdoor Zack Posted June 23, 2016 Posted June 23, 2016 I use the classic Trilene and have had no issues with it. I would suggest that you keep an eye on the lne for damage or UV breakdown. It might be damaged or even a screw-up by the factory (happens sometimes). Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 A couple suggestions. You could check the line guides, they might be damaging the line. Did you leave your rod in sunlight? UV rays break line down. Check your knot, what might seem like a line breaking could be your knot letting go. As for line suggestions, don't laugh - I suggest Cajun Red Cast. I use it on most of my reels. It is strong, the knot strength is great, and best of all, it is not at all expensive. 3 Quote

I think it might be the guides, they are a little beat up on my mojo bass and I always wondered if they affect the line. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted June 24, 2016 Super User Posted June 24, 2016 Go find a local tackle shop and ask who repairs rods. Have a good rod builder replace all of the guides with a better quality set of guides. Quote
CenCal fisher Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 is your line breaking when you cast, when you set the hook or when you have a fish on? 14lb mono is strong enough line for bass fishing. If you tie some knots wrong your line will break well below test strength. Also lick your line when pulling the knot tight to lubricate and cool the line. Are you using a spinning or bait casting setup? Quote

DrePac3000 Posted June 24, 2016 Author Posted June 24, 2016 Yes the line breaks mid cast, I make sure to check my line often and retie when needed 13 hours ago, fishnkamp said: Go find a local tackle shop and ask who repairs rods. I don't have any tackle shops nearby could I try using some sort of lubricant on the eyes to reduce abrasion Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted June 24, 2016 Super User Posted June 24, 2016 I do not think it would help. If they are rough any line and line conditioner would be damaged. Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 24, 2016 Super User Posted June 24, 2016 Take a cotton Q tip and run it through every guide ring. If you see a few cotton fibers sticking to the guide ring the guide is cracked. Look at your line for damage and run it between your fingers and feel for any flat or rough spots and any fuzzy surfaces. Sometimes backlashes can cause line damage by flattening spots when you try to pull out loops. Don't pull on the loops! When you get a backlash slowly pull off line until it stops...don't pull tight, stop! Now put your thumb firmly down onto the spooled line and wind all the line back onto the reel. Next step is to slowly pull off the line laying it in the water if possible until you are past all loose line and loops, it should come off the spool without pulling hard. Respool the line using your finger to keep tension and feeling the line for any damage. To test line strength wrap the line around your hand few wraps and follow by wrapping a few times around your other hand about afoot apart. Put your hands together and snap apart, the line shouldn't break easily. Good luck. Tom Quote

His post reads like he might be new to fishing and I wanted to make sure I knew when his line is breaking. Someone new to fishing might say their line breaks while casting even though it breaks when they get a birds nest and the line kinks itself then on the next cast it breaks at that link. Someone new to fishing might also be using an overhand knot and it is coming undone when they try to cast. line shouldn't just break while the lure is in the air, even if it has been damaged in the sun. Something is wrong with the knot, rod or reel. Quote

Thats why i asked if you even read the post. Doesnt sound like you really did...perhaps youre new to forums and only skim posts instead of reading the entire post... Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 25, 2016 Super User Posted June 25, 2016 I've snapped 4# Trilene XL on casts using a 9' fiberglass rod. A 10# leader solved that problem. No way in the world could I snap 14# any brand line on a cast unless it was rotted. I suppose you could have gotten a bad....very, very bad....batch of line, but most likely the problem is elsewhere. See above comments. Good luck finding the problem. Quote
DrePac3000 Posted June 26, 2016 Author Posted June 26, 2016 Problem solved i respolled with 30lb powers pro and the problem went away 1 Quote
