How much is to much

I just jumped from Spangler to boater. My question is when it comes to combos how many do you use? I've been on boats were guys have 40 combos rigged and I've seen guys with 5 rigged. I Currently have 10 but want to get a couple more. What is pros and cons of so many combos?

I have 50+ combos most i use is 3 this is shore fishing and yak fishing .i used to have a 19 ft center console .lesss is more for me anyhow.i can do all i need with 3 combos fresh and salt

I have around 25 in the boat with me and that's about all my locker will hold. I feel like that's about perfect for me to have rods to cover everything that I might run into.

I had 15 combos last year.  Over the winter I got it down to 8.  When I'm out on the water I usually end up using 4 or 5.

have 24 right now.works for me but like almost everyone else, end up using 5-6 most of the time.never want to get caught without the one combo when the time is right.

I have around 15 and slowly getting more. I normall have all of them in boat when i go out, but only keep 6-7 out. If i want to get out a diffrent one, i put another one up in locker.  If i go with someone else in their boat i try and only take 5. I try and find out the proposed game plan and bring versatile rigs and others accordingly with gameplan, ie if we are ledge fishing i bring my deep crank rod not my senko rod or vice versa. 

The advantage to having more combos is the fact that you have more lures prerigged and dont spend as much water time retieing or changing baits. Allows you also to have more dedicated use rods for one particular use mainly. 

Disadvantage is obvious costs of more combos and storage issues.

I normally carry 18 setups in the boat.  I try to keep It to 5 or 6 on the deck at any one time.

My only confusion is like most of you have said you have 20+ combos but only really use 5-7. I cant see spending $400-$500 on combos that will just sit in my locker. Do you keep less expensive combos in the locker and have those 5-7 you mostly use be more top end?

I have lots of different combos to do lots of different things. Some lakes a certain technique isn't effective (I don't need my deep cranking/drop shot/shakyhead rod on a lake that's mostly punching or flipping weeds or tons of standing timber for example). I still keep those rods in the locker for when I do need them though. Then things like jigs/t rigs on a flipping lake I might want to have a rod with a beaver, jig, creature, and a big worm, so I have multiple rods with similar ratings that don't get used often but can be very helpful in figuring out the fish when I do use them. 

Price of the combo has little to do with it. One of my most expensive (Curado 200E7/LTB) sits in the locker a majority of the year because it's my C-rig setup and I hate dragging the ball and chain, but it's a must have bait at times so I keep it in there.

Agreed. I'm not a tourney fisher but still don't think I could justify more than 8 or 10. I think I could almost retie a lure by the time most could get a rod out of a locker. Especially one that's on the bottom with 10 on top of it. Lol

I think its more personal preference, bring what you have and see how you work with it. You will learn more from your own experiences than from others on the forum. What works for them or me may not work for you. You may realize, you may want 10 more combos, or 2 less combos. You also have to take in account how much tackle you want with you as well. Get on the water and after a couple trips i bet you will have a better idea than you think. Good luck bud!

Well, if one has a boat it is a different story. You don't have to carry them around, can store them nicely and also have probably more money available/dedicated to the sport of fishing.

I am a 95% bank angler and my set up consists of 5 combos and a 6th that is just in the car.

Carrying 5 combos around is getting already a bit border line, but oh well..

THough if I had a boat and the the dough I would probably have around 8-10 combos, JUST IN CASE

To me it depends  on the kind of fishing  you do.

I bass fish  90% of the  time.

But I  also  have  rods for catfish, crappie, saltwater and bank fishing. 

So i have to have enough  combos to cover  all those situations  and more.

I really don't want to know how many combos I own, but I rarely take more than six and more often than not five will cover the techniques I want to use/try on any given day.  If it's an overnighter, or multi day trip, I may bring more, but only take what I feel I'll need.  Most of my combos are 7ft. or longer and my rod locker isn't designed for longer rods, so they sit out on the deck when I'm fishing.
