Whopper Plopper 90 & Spinning Rig?

Has anyone tried this? I would like to use my 7' Fenwick HMG Medium/Fast or 6'6 Fenwick Aetos Medium/Fast, paired with either 15lb or 20lb braid. Is this a mistake?

I was under the assumption that I could use my spinning rods with any bait thats within the suggested weight range. For example, I purchased some 1/2oz and 3/4oz jigs, but little did I know, I can't really use them with my spinning setup, so I picked up some smaller 1/4oz and 3/8oz jigs. What's the purpose of the lure size range if you can't use the entire range?

You should be fine throwing the 90 on spinning gear. 

The rod can handle that weight for casting, but may not be ideal for working a lure due to it's action. For example, while cat fishing I use a 1 ounce weight on spinning gear all the time since the weight just sits out. If I'm fishing something that requires me to impart movement, I won't fish anything heavier than a fluke on spinning.

From my experience, the Fenwick Aetos lines are lighter than other rods in terms of power. I think you could get away with throwing the Whopper Plopper on the HMG but I could see how it would make the Aetos feel floppy.

That was my thought as well. The HMG is definitely more stout than the Aetos, so I picture using the Aetos for the more sensitive techniques.

I throw the Whopper Plopper with a TFO 6'9" med fast, rated 1/4 to 3/4. Absolutely no problem. You can use any lure within those ratings. Obviously some lures and techniques work better with heavier or lighter rods.

I sometimes throw my Whopper Plopper 90 on my Phenix M1 MXS72M spinning rod with a 2500 size Shimano spooled with 15# braid, with no problems.

Not to get off topic but I have several Med HMG rods that feel like Med Light rod I would hate to see use the Aetos if it is worse.

I can add to those who have done it. My wife hasn't mastered a baitcaster yet, so she uses my M/F BPS Carbonlite and a Stradic Ci4 3000 when she wants to do something different than the finesse fishing she loves.  I run 10 pound flouro on it and we have no issues.  Matter of fact, the only lure that is "hers" is a 90 in loon. The 130, that would be a different story.

This is all very helpful, and totally allays my concerns. Thank you all! Now the next question is color: Munkey Butt, Rat Tat Tat, or Shad in 90?

Also, was I correct in concluding that it's not really a wise idea to fish a 1/2oz - 3/4oz jig on a spinning rod that is rated for that range? Is there something specific about jig fishing that makes spinning rods unreasonable?

I've heard as far as the Whopper Plopper goes that the best colors are: Loon (black), Bone (white) and Monkey Butt. Not sure if this is a geographical location type thing or if the success of these colors transcends that and are useful everywhere but with all of the reviews on these that I've read those seem to be the most sought after colors.
