NSFishingHalifax Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Hi all,Relatively new to fishing and have a question for you. I have been having trouble with my line becoming twisted, as it seems it is constantly "jumping" off the reel when I'm casting, leaving it to become a tangled mess. I have been doing some reading online about line and reel combos, but have not been able to come to a general conclusion. I have been thinking about going to a braided line as I read it is less prone to tangles as it has little to zero memory. I mostly fish trout and bass in small to medium sized lakes. Here are the specs of my reel and current line:Spinning Reel: lb(kg) - yrds (m) 6(2.7) - 210(190) 8(3.6) - 170 (155) DIA (mm) - m 0.25 - 190 0.28 - 155Line: Monofilament - DIA 0.30mm - 10lbs test - Sufix Pro Select I guess my question would be: What type of line should I be using? Dia and test? Do I need a leader?Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Quote
smr913 Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 15# braid will have the diameter equivalency of 4ish# mono. That would be my choice. Use some 6-8#mono as backing to avoid having to put 200 yards of braid on your reel. I do not use a leader with reaction baits, but if your water is on the clearer side I would opt for a 8# fluoro or mono leader in the 2-6 feet range. Quote
hawgenvy Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Some options: 1) Stick with your current set up but take some line off. If the spool is under-filled the line will be less likely to fly off like that. Some people believe that line conditioner such as Reel Magic can help, too. 2) Use lighter line -- 6 or 8 lb 3) Use braid. But use a mono or fluoro leader unless the water is muddy. Make sure your knot between braid and leader is perfect. Quote
S. Sass Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 That line should work. How full is the spool? Make sure it's not filled all the way to the edge. I'll leave about a 1/8" depending on the size of the spool and the design of the lip on it. Braid works awesome for me I see many talk about fish being frightened off the bite with no leader but I don't give bass that much credit and have no issue catching fish with no leader. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted June 20, 2016 Super User Posted June 20, 2016 Welcome aboard! Good suggestions above. Years ago I switched all my reels to braid plus a leader. Braid is, in my experience, so much better for line management. It doesn't jump off the spool like mono... You can go straight braid if you do not want to use a leader. Heaviest braid I use is 15# test. Quote
"hamma" Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 look up causes for line twist first,... do some reading with good research. The problem usually isnt the line, its what the line has been subjected too. Reeling against the drag, improper refills, fighting multiple fish without straighting, these are just a few causes for line twist,....if its experience thats lacking you may be right back to line twist with any line. If you have a boat cut the lure/hook off, and slowly troll the line behind the boat, let out about half the spool, and just motor slowly for a bit this will straighten it,...when you reel it back in make sure you apply some tension as the spool begins to fill Quote
srestrepo Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 either that or the line was loaded improperly off of the spool. I try and do what Keith Hatch said and let half of the spool out with a worm or something and a barrel swivel and then reel back in under tension to try and alleviate some of that kinked up line. An Outdoor Guy Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Either: 1) You put the line on in the wrong direction. make sure you put the line on the same direction the reel is spinning 2) you have to much line on and its overflowing off your reel when you flip the bail 3) take your spool off after you have the line on and dip it in hot (not boiling) water for 5minutes this helps the line gain memory onto your spool as for line twist I usually use 20lbs braid with a KVD 18lb swivel and a fluorocarbon leader on all my spinning rods. it keeps line twist down and I have the cast ability and ease of braid with the invisibility of fluorocarbon. Best of luck to you! Quote
Zayne Royal Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 I have never had any problems using braid, from 10# to 150#. id say give it a try Quote
