You_Only_Live_Once_Fishing Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 I recently purchased a Quantum Smoke PT 151 6.6:1 for 100$ I put 30 pound braid on it it and planned to use it for every thing. The reel doesn't work at all and I am going to sell it. What reel is affordable but good? Quote
riverbasser Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 BPS pro qualifier. The reviews speak for itself. I'm waiting on a sale where they normally go down to 89 or even 79. They are $99 regular price. I have 3 and that's all I fish. 3 Quote

illinifan4152 Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 If you are going new, I would pick up a curado I. You can get one new for around $130. Great reel at that price point. 2 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 20, 2016 Super User Posted June 20, 2016 I don't believe I have ever seen a reel that didn't work at all. Well........I did buy a used reel that froze up the third time I took it out. Didn't work at all at that point. A spring came off and got in the gears. I wouldn't plan on getting my money back if you give an honest description of the reel. The Smoke 150 size reels get some pretty good reviews. Might be worth sending it to a professional for appraisal. Should wind up being cheaper in the long run than buying a new reel. 1 Quote
MPM IV Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 I picked up a Daiwa Tatula for about $95 and it's been a great reel. I also owned a Quantum smoke for about a day before sending it back. There wasn't anything wrong with it, I just wasn't crazy about it. Quote
Fishinthefish Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Pro qualifier if you're looking to get it from a store quickly, shop around on auction sites and you can probably find a decent type R and a few other good reels for around 100, this forum also has plenty of used reels for sale at any time. S. Sass Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Dont forget Lew's sells a excellent reel for $100 and the Tournament MG for just a few bucks more. Excellent reels for the $100 ish price point and can be found a good discounts if shopping around. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 21, 2016 Super User Posted June 21, 2016 Operator error, you have a good reel, learn how to use it. Do you plan to tell the buyer it's doesn' work? Tom 6 Quote
U-boat Aficionado Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 I have both a BPS Pro Qualifier and Lews LFS and prefer the smaller profile and smoothness of the Lews. I can't comment on which will perform better over the long haul, but both are very nice reels. The rest of the reels mentioned are nice as well, I'm sure! 1 Quote
Zayne Royal Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 I think you should check out the abu Garcia orra or revo, or the shimano stradic for a spinning reel. for a baitcasting reel id look at the abu revo winch, or for larger game the abu ambassador. Quote
nameiztaken Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 Be cautious with sub $130 Lews, had some bad experiences personally with them. I'd recommend a Shimano or Daiwa reel, you really cant go wrong there. Quote

Drew03cmc Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 Revo S here, can be had on the bay for $99. Quote
Ohiolipripper45 Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 Shimano caenan 150 7:2.1 are amazing reels you can get one for 100 Quote
Acerty Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 Is this the reel you dunked in the water? If so, replace the tension cap and give it a good cleaning and lubing and it should be good to go. Smokes not a bad reel by any means, and a dunk in the water will not ruin it unless perhaps its salt water. Quote
Jaderose Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 So......you bought this reel. In a very short period of time you have A.) Dropped it in the water. B.) Lost the tension control knob. C.) Taken it apart and struggled to put it back together....apparently not believing the schematics and, I'm assuming, NOT watched any good videos showing you how to do it. My advice? Zebco 6 Quote

If you're not capable of doing it, sell the reel for parts ($20 or so) or get it serviced. Those Smoke reels are damned nice reels. My question is why did you disassemble it? Was it grinding, binding or something else? 1 Quote
You_Only_Live_Once_Fishing Posted June 22, 2016 Author Posted June 22, 2016 it was making a loud noise and would stop spinning as fast hallway through the cast, which decreased casting distance, also it was dropped in the water by accident. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted June 22, 2016 Super User Posted June 22, 2016 Get it repaired or replace with a Diawa Tatula and do not take it apart! Also make sure to load some either mono or copoly line on the reel. Make sure the knot you tie on the reel is tight. If that slips then the reel will not act correctly. Add say 20 feet of backing just to cover the arbor then tie on your braid. Braid is known for slipping on an arbor. I always load 1/2 of spool of backing (good quality copolymer line which is much cheaper than expensive braid) and then my braid. Doing this means I can fill two reels for the price of one. Quote
