Fishing Points

I am having trouble with summer fishing in this 100 degree weather. I am a bank fisherman. And I need an easy way to detect points and underwater structure. I feel like anytime I find a point, straight out its almost completely flat and shallow the sides have a little depth to them but i still don't have much luck with it. I guess I'm looking for some hot weather bank fishing techniques. I try to fish deeper but without electronics it's hard to find a decent group of fish. The only luck I've had is early evening with a spook along the bank but I will catch one and that will be it. So should I fish the flat part of the point or the sides. Should I be fishing the middle or the bottom. Should I be fishing much slower in the heat? Just looking for advice to beat these dog days of summer. Thanks

A good way to combat the dog days is to switch to water with current (tidal water, rivers, creeks, etc.). If you do not have access to that type of water then you best bet from the shore is going to be early and late in the day and areas that are shaded during the day. Where are you fishing and do you know what your water temperatures are?

I am fishing in Nebraska it's been in upper 90s the past week or two so the temps are pretty high. I been trying to find some good waters around here. We have the platte river but I have never caught a bass out of it. I wouldn't know where to begin fishing the river lol! I try to find shaded areas but from the bank it's all weeds. I try topwater but don't have much luck in the afternoon and plus the water is still a little stained from all the rain we have had.

I am in Maryland, while we have had a few days pushing 90 degrees my water temperatures are still only 76 - 78 degrees. I have post spawn bass but they have not moved to deeper summer offshore spots yet.

Based on what you are describing on a lake/reservoir type situation from the shore. I would be on the water before first light knowing that my best window for catching will only be a couple of hours. Same situation in the evening, I would focus on fishing from an hour before sunset to an hour after sunset. Night fishing is another option.

Some lakes will make shore fishing during summer days extremely difficult. If the layout of the lake does not offer you deeper water on a cast from shore then you have to put your head down and fish what you have access to. If you have shaded weedy areas I would texas rig a plastic worm, peg the sinker and work it through those weeds.

With the Texas rig I usually fish them weightless. When I peg it I use a 5/16 bullet weight and in the weeds it seems to get stuck (a lot) so I give it a jerk to break it free and I feel like doing that spooks the fish. Then I get impatient and start fishing it too fast. Should I use a lighter weight and just twitch it ever so often. Or should I bring my rod tip straight up out of the weeds and let it fall. I have caught plenty of fish on senkos but that was pre spawn and they would hit anything and there were no weeds growing yet.

Getting a bait momentarily hung up in the weeds then popping it free can be enough to trigger a neutral bass into striking, That is a day to day thing with largemouth so you have to try various retrieves until the fish give you some feed back on what they want that day. Depending on the size of the bass you regularly encounter you can also down size to a tube for the same presentation.

You cant fish good extended points from bank because your stuck fishing the shallow section ..   If the fish are deep  , you're out of luck . Sorry ..

Once you've located a point, look at the shoreline on both sides of it.  That shoreline will give you clues to how quickly and where the sides of the point drop off to deeper water.  Those are the areas to target. Working your way from the the shallow (top) section of the point toward deeper water with some type of slow moving, bottom contact bait like a Texas or C-Rig will allow you to locate areas of structural change and cover. Work your way deeper and repeat. This will help you form a mental picture of where the drop begins and ends and what cover or changes are there. 

Then you can go back and cover the prime spots with either the same presentation, or something to trigger strikes from neutral fish like a crank or spinner.
