DuckettDude Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 I have one and truly like it what are you guys thoughts on them? Quote
Molay1292 Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 Which one do you have? There have been 3 generations of the STX. Although it was considered heavy and the finish was poor, the 2nd gen Revo STX was my favorite. It was a very solid reel. Quote
Chance_Taker4 Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Gen 2 STX is still by far my favorite reel to use. I was using all Revos exclusively since they were introduced. They had a massive following. But the poor performance of the gen 3 has lost their following, myself included. A little birdie told me that the Gen 4s will be released at iCast coming up and performance will be on par with the gen 2 with the lightness and sleek design of the Gen 3. I hope this is true because I miss using good Revos. Quote

I got to check one out at the Classic, the guys in the ABU booth had one they were hiding, when I mentioned it they kind of played it off, but when I told them I had seen pictures of it, they let me sneak a quick peek. Did not get to handle it though. 1 Quote

Like yourself, I use to fish ABU exclusively, once they started with the gen 3, I lost interest and moved. I still have 3 or 4 gen 2 reels and an MGX , the rest are gone. I guess we will see what they come up with for the new reels shortly. 1 Quote
Robert Riley Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 I keep hearing about the Gen2 vs the Gen3, consensus in that the Gen3 is inferior. But I've got a Gen3 STX in 6:1 that I use for my spinnerbait set up. My only complaint is that the line does not lay evenly. Not sure if it's a reel problem or a line problem, but I haven't figured it out yet. Quote
Grantman83 Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 I think Abu got focused on the weight eduction for the third generation Revos. They are so wide compared to other reels also. I have a few I got for crazy good deals though. My biggest peeve? The dang 80mm handle lol Quote
blckshirt98 Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 I use a Gen2 STX for my crankbait rod and it's been solid for me, would not hesitate to use a Gen2 STX again. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 17, 2016 Super User Posted June 17, 2016 I have a Gen 1 that normally goes with me on visits to Florida. Spooled with 40# braid. Use if for the pads and weeds. Excellent casting reel. I've had no problems with it. Went fishing in brackish water one morning. Made some awful long casts (for me...I can't spool a reel) using a 3/4 oz. spoon. Caught a few flounder that day with it. No problem casting an unweighted 10" ribbontail on a 5/0 EWG. I like it better than my Gen 1 Premier. Picked up a Gen 2 Premier over the winter but haven't used it yet so I can't compare it to the STX, but when the Gen 2 Premier reels came out many considered them to be the best reel in their price range. Zero experience with the Gen 3 reels, but given the poor reviews by some people, I don't ever plan on trying that particular model. Quote

You will really enjoy the Premier, it is a solid reel all the way around. The 2nd Gen Premier had some tough competition with the OG Zillion, and the Curado 200e but I always felt like it was very capable of holding its own. I had 5 of them and a Revo Elite IB, I never felt out gunned. Quote
Nathan Burton Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I just started bass fishing last year. With that being said, a gen 3 revo stx was one of my first reels I purchased. So far I've really enjoyed it's use. Keep in mind, I don't have much to compare it to. Quote

Keep in mind, I don't have much to compare it to I also started baitcasting last year, and the STX Gen 3 was my second baitcaster, in 6.4:1 thinking it would be OK for crankbaits. I wasn't aware of the generational issues. Overall, I am happy with it, but it took a while to get there. When I first got it, the crank wobbled slightly and after I sent it back for inspection, the wobble remained and the handle keeper popped off. Abu replaced the reel after my second return. It feels solid and light, and reasonably smooth, but I actually prefer the feel of my SX for most applications. Quote
