I figured if ANYONE could disprove a Ned Rig

It would be me.  I've NEVER caught ANY fish on any type of jig.  EVER.  Went to my development pond here in Fort Wayne this morning, two rods in hand.  My trusty baitcaster and Stanley Ribbit combo, and my spinner.  After a little while of no action on the topwater frog, I decided to put together this "Ned Rig" thing that I got the kit in for over the weekend.  

This is the most stupidly simple thing ever.  Fish it like a jig I was told.  I figure there's no way this is going to work, especially in a small 2-3 acre pond.  

The only thing I disproved was my inability to catch a fish on a jig anymore.  

No pic of the first one because I was too excited.  Had a BIG one break my line, and lost three more in the air on the shake.  Landed 7 total in about 2 hours of fishing, and could have been 11.  I am VERY impressed with the Ned Rig to say the least.  The last one I caught I watched him cruise through then head towards the deeper water, so I just flicked it out about 20 feet and swam it in towards me, and he went right after it.  Fish can't control themselves around this lure.  I'm truly amazed.......and a pretty happy guy this morning!

Nice fish!  But a Ned rig isn't really a jig, so I think your results will be multiplied if you try the swim/glide and shake retrieve.  Basically you cast it out, and allow it to sink to the right depth while constantly and lightly shaking your rod tip.  If it makes it to the bottom slowly reel it in a few feet while lightly shaking your rod tip.  After moving it a few feet stop shaking it and allow it to glide back to the bottom on a tight line.  But the nice thing about it is the bass like it so much they will usually bite it to some degree no matter how you retrieve it.

No stealing my thunder dang it!!  lol  Seriously though, I thought that's how you'd normally fish it, like a jig along the bottom imitating a batfish feeding.  I figured it's such a similar setup and fish style as a jig (I'm considering the little rubber grub's as jig style too) that it could be classified the same.  Either way, they LOVED it.  One even took it about a second after it dropped in the water, on the fall.  Wasn't expecting that one.

How is it not a jig? It's a hook with a lead weight near the eye and a piece of plastic threaded on to the hook. That is certainly a jig to me. All jigs are not just the bass jigs with the rubber skirt, a big hook and a weed guard.

It is technically a jig, but when I think of jigs I think of skirted jigs.  I was just suggesting trying some of the other Midwest finesse retrieves made by experienced Ned riggers like Ned kahde.

Anyways, glad you had some success with Ned! It has served me very well. As @IndianaFinesse mentioned, using different retrieves may net you even more fish. However, when it comes to the Ned, as long as it is in the water you will find luck.

I plan to try some different retrieves with it.  I did quote you in the Hoosier thread, but for some reason the forum was auto adding it to this thread too.  I tried to take it out but it woudln't let me.

Awesome fish! While I tend to think of the Ned as a jig, I personally fish it differently than I would a flipping jig, and on much different tackle. But your statement about getting bit almost immediately after the bait hit the water is inductive of a strong, active feed-mode during the time you were fishing, the bass were likely cruising the pond feeding on baitfish. I avoided most manner of jig fishing for a long time, but once you've seen the light, it's a tough range of techniques to abandon. Once you feel you've nailed down everything a Ned rig can do, try out a tube or craw, which are terffic bass baits for almost any body of water (like any lure-    effectiveness depends greatly on time of year and fish behavior in that particular timeframe). In any case, it looks like you slammed them so that gets a big in my book!
