JonahMiao Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 I am a very hefty braid user and was wondering when should I respool my braid? I've been using the same spool of braid for about 2-3 months now and have not had a problem yet, should I be concerned about anything? The braid I use is Power Pro 30lb braid. Quote
riverbasser Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 I don't have a definite asnwer.I use mono backing with my braid so I'm only running about a 100 or so yards of braid. When I'm getting to the end of the braid on a Long cast is when I respool. I've Also had one instance where the braid looked kind of unraveled after much use and I respooled it Quote
long island basser Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 I have used braid almost exclusively for many years now and only respool when my casting distance is compromised. Some are over two years old, no problems. It lasts a very long time. I would not be concerned. 2 Quote
blckshirt98 Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 I just re-spooled some 15# PowerPro on a spinning reel that gets more use out of any other reel I have. I re-spooled because on a couple of snags the braid itself along the mainline was the failure point not one of the knots or the 10# FC leader. The braid was fraying from rubbing against stuff in the water, and, the braid itself was low on the spool from tying/cutting off tag end/etc. Instead of just pulling enough line to remove the fraying I removed the braid down to the PowerPro Slick8 that I had originally spooled but now acts as backing, where I just need to replace the regular PowerPro "top shot", which lasted me over a year. Braid will last years if you don't use it in high contact areas where the braid will fray, otherwise check the first few meters from fraying/broken fibers and consider replacing if you feel it's getting a bit much. Super User Crestliner2008 Posted June 13, 2016 Super User Posted June 13, 2016 You're a long way from having to worry about it. Most of my rigs are filled with braid these days and most have years on them, not months. Push comes to shove, if you think you have a problem, spool the line off onto another spool and re-wind it with the used section at the bottom. 2 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted June 14, 2016 Super User Posted June 14, 2016 I'd say no less than 2 years. I'm on my third year of some 50 lb that I'll probably replace with 30 lb when I finally do respool. You can reel used braid onto another reel and you'll be using the new end again. 2 Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 Almost never. I fish daily for five to six hours on average and have never had braided line deteriorate. Quote

I usually fish braid until it becomes worn and doesn't cast well, then I'll flip it like described and fish it until it's worn again. A spool of braid should last a couple years as long as there's no major issues. 1 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 I only use braid on my frog rod and it has been on three years. Quote
faygo1979 Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 I will cut off braid that looks frayed from dragging around rocks and through wood but other than that Keep it on until you get bored and want something new. Quote
