Zebco Omniflex Mono?

Anyone ever use this stuff? I was at Walmart today and they had some 700yd spools of 12# line. I picked up 2 spools for like 3 bucks. I figured I would use it as backing on my reels from now on, and that unless it literally disintegrated in my hands it would be a good buy for that purpose. Anyone actually use it as mainline though? Just curious.

I've used it on kids / loaner rigs where I expect to go thru lots of line from tangles, snags, twist etc. As far as inexpensive mono goes you could do worse I think.

i'd have no problems using it for backing, but i don't know on the mainline.  i'd rather spend a couple more bucks and pick up some big game.

yea, I took some off the spool to test it and it actually surprised me. Stronger than some other 12lb I have. I still don't trust it so it will stay as backing line for now.

I had the 50 and the 15. the 50 was way to stiff and didn't cast well at all. the 15 felt a little weak, but casted alright and had decent sensitivity

I have the 4lb Omniflex on my ultralight that I use to catch bluegills. I accidentally caught a 10 lb catfish once and the line held up...it might had a lot to do with the loose drag, but the line did not break while I was fighting the catfish. The line is stronger than I expected.

To revisit an old thread...

 

I tried the Walmart Shakespeare Omniflex line years ago, just junk. Not any good at any price imho.

 

But, it's now Zebco Omniflex lol. At the store, the line just looked better, thought I'd give it a try.

 

Used some 10lb (.012") all day today on spinnerbaits and spots on a couple of old Abu 5000s, cast nicely, supple, and didn't see any issues. A huge jump from the last Shakespeare spool I tried years ago.

If you watch Realistic Fishing on YouTube Zebco Omniflex is he uses. Never seen him break off a fish during a fight.

 

I have several spools of the 8lb and 10lb Zebco Omniflex at home. I haven't had any problems with it but I do prefer the Berkley Big Game line I picked up on clearance for $3 at Walmart better.

Big Game isn't much more expensive and is a proven line, I wouldn't risk it.

Indeed. I gambled on it because they didn’t have big game in the test I needed.

@NYWayfarer did you have these spooled on baitcaster? I just spooled the 10# on baitcaster and when I retrieve my lure the line does not get very tight back on the spool. Is that a line issue? I mean my lure is 1/4 oz jig head and its catching some grass as I am practicing in the yard so it has some tension on it.

It just seems very stiff. I mean it's $3

Sorry, I have only used this stuff on spinning reels. I use KVD line and lure conditioner or Reel Snot on it. Seems to help with the stiffness.

I use it on nearly every single reel I own... As backing.

 

When I was a young boy and my dad would take me fishing to farm ponds, Zebco omniflex 10 lb test was the only line we would ever use. We would catch dozens of fish at every outing and a significant portion of those fish were over 5 lbs. Back then we would only use spinning gear, but I don't recall really having much of a problem with the line.

Yea I've been using it as backing since I started this thread, it's been fine for that. I'd probably trust it in a pinch if I had to use it as mainline tough, it doesn't seem awful especially for the price.

Tried it for fun. It's kinda stiff. Found that the line gets "rashed" quicker than better lines by the tip when casting long and hard.

I just always feel mono is inexpensive enough that you shouldn't buy something just because it's the cheapest. You never know when you'll accidentally snag your PB, and in that moment I'm pretty sure the few bucks you saved at Wally World won't matter, you'd use whatever gets her in the boat.

 

Buy the good/proven/well-made stuff, it'll take care of you later.

 

Not that the OP's line choice is junk, but I hear far better feedback on Big Game, Trilene XL, Seaguar Senshi, Izorline, etc. to take the chance with something that's just a couple dollars less.
