If sponsorships annoy you all so much, how do you manage to watch ANY kind of video produced by any segment of the fishing industry?

I expect young people like to watch the youtube unboxings for the same reasons I used to like flipping through a bass pro catalog as a kid, over and over, dreaming of one day owning every color of worm and every type of rapala.

If you don't enjoy watching the stuff DIY fishing youtubers are doing, that's a sign you probably aren't the intended audience.

Yeah, you have to understand that bigtime pro bass fishing is simply NASCAR on water. .

I like to watch YouTube videos made on a GoPro by guys just like me, and usually fishing from a kayak. The more low-buck and low-tech, the better. But I do critique their videos, and rarely give anyone a thumbs down.

I enjoy watching pros fish. But I get very little out of shows and video clips of pros trying to give tips. Too many of them do not communicate effectively what they're doing and why, and end up touting their own superstitions as knowledge, or absurdly declaring a sponsor's product as the solution to why you aren't catching as many fish as they do. But I've seen a lot of things on youtube where some dude in his garage or living room or out on the water says, look what I made/did/tried, or says, here was a problem I figured out how to solve, and I go, "why didn't I think of that?"  there are quite a lot of good kayaking youtubers in this vein. And even of the others, I can forgive a few vlogs or unboxings for some videos like that once and a while.

The abiliity to comment, critique and videomakers frequent willingness to respond is also an underappreciated advantage of youtube.

I prefer to just watch people fish. I don't need the unboxings, obnoxious music I've never heard of, or instructions how to rig a Texas rig, but some people like and need that. I stick to guys out fishing for the sake of fishing and leave the others to guys who are into that stuff.

I  like watching some of the Texas bases anglers do their thing because I fish some of those lakes and ponds, I just like watching them as they progress and dissect their approaches.

I don't watch too many YouTube fishing videos unless it's a pro or unless I'm looking for a review or water test of a specific bait, but how some suggestions on some YouTube people that actually offer up good informative videos?

One guy I watch that I find very engaging is KeepingItReelFishing.  His videos are on the long side but he's informative and his presentations are very "clean" in that they're coherent, easy to follow and understand, and he doesn't stumble or break up his sentences with a bunch of "ums".  He also seems objective when he breaks down the pros and cons of something.

It's been interesting to me to watch the evolution and growth of fishing channels on YouTube in the last few years, they've exploded and a lot has changed.

Sponsorships have become much more prevalent, MTB and LTB in particular have claimed every prominent YouTuber. The connectivity and friendships between Youtubers has grown, they constantly travel to fish with each other. The game has become less of a "let's upload my fishing trips for a couple bucks on youtube" to a way of making a living.

Do I blame the guys for choosing to fish for a living? No. Do I wish they would be a little less quiet about their sponsors? Yes. Do I still watch them? Absolutely. i love Youtube and the fishing community is no different.

I don't blame some of you guys for your opinions. I do think that a large audience of these guys are younger people such as myself, and I know it's different for us than it is for you.

Like most have said, if you dont like it move on. Its there for entertainment. Some i like, others i do not. Some are actually pretty awesome. I have directv and often i will (or at least used to) look ahead to saturday and sunday mornings to see what there is on tv for fishing shows. I would record all i found that were bass fishing. But you talk about commercials, and infomercials, trying to sell you on everything. It is rediculous. Really 5 minutes of fishing for a 30 minute show. Some are ok. I do enjoy the bassmasters on espn/2 or whatever channel it is. They are very thorough and go in depth to describe what was working, the conditions etc. I learn a lot on that show.

For myself, youtube is very valuable. I dont get all my info from there. I greatly rely on this site for its articles and member content. There are some extremely knowledgable and successful guys on here. And i put into action a lot of what they say. This site is an amazing site and has made me the fisherman i am today (albeit a green one...going into my second summer bass fishing).

I really enjoy Uncut angling. Aaron seems like a genuine fun guy to be around and the fishing shows are always entertaining. The guy with the funky hats, mikeybalz or something makes good films too. I like his offshore approach and that he's a genuine fisherman working it out and filming it as he goes. Lake Fork Guy is getting a bit too commercial and I hate the getting together with other youtube "stars" thing. really? Backslapping.com! Most of the other guys are getting less watchable as they get more taken up with their own importance and debts to sponsors. It's a shame. I suppose there will always (?) be new guys coming along who make good films, before they get swallowed up by corporate nonsense, and I will keep seeking them out. The others get less and less of my attention.

All I've got to say, is that if that is what gets your blood boiling, be grateful - because that's a pretty good fricken life! B)

I think it is a mistake when youtubers announce they are quitting their day job and doing videos full time for a living.  They would be better off keeping that quiet.

What's a youtube?

Stupid fishing shows aren't limited to the interwebs....tried watching NBC Sports the other day...Sweet Water or something...lousy.....I'd have been better off watching MikeyBallz or even a Scott Martin Challenge

Wouldn't make a hill of beans difference. Once the guy starts touting his sponsors names where he use to be fishing and being the average laid back guy that you watched for a year or two. It would be more than obvious what was going on.

you're right about not being limited to the youtube it's on the tube tube too....  fishing with Roland can be a 30 minute infomercial sometimes.

there's also another one that's on both tubes, chad hoover the "kayak bass fishing godsend"....  if i were ever captured by foreign invaders and subjected to some sort of inhumane war tactics, it would be chad hoover on a 24 hour loop.  give me the jumper cables, the water boarding, hot oil or the rack but PLEASE no chad......

So many of these videos that are "instructional" leave out the instructions that actually matter.

They almost never talk about water temp, water clarity, season, spawn cycle, what the cover or structure they are fishing is, boat positioning, etc.

There is also so much equipment pushed and they rarely explain why you might need it or the benefits of it. They rarely break down techniques either.

What about those women that fish salt water. They stand in the front of the boat with the smallest bikinis made on. The camera man is consently getting booty shots in. I felt like a pervert watching one.

What you didnt know fishing poles and such were connected to skimpy outfits on girls?  Your suppose to be watching the fishing not the bikini. You knew exactly what was in that bikini your eyes just couldn't refocus on the fishing. :lol-047:

Yeah there is one I saw I won't mention a name but it's obvious what she and her bf are selling. Not that they can't fish but seriously fishing is #2 on the list. They see a opertunity to cash in and the little boys are lining up.

Again if people don't like it use the mouse and click elsewhere like I have been lately.

I don't get all the different types of videos out there but then again...I don't have to.  I watch what I want to and ignore the rest.  At 48 yrs old, fishing is, to me, a chance to get away from all the electronic gizmos and crap I deal with on a daily basis.  I don't carry a Go Pro...heck, I lock my phone in my truck.  I don't even have...*GASP*....electronics on my boat.  I just bought a new boat and will probably put something on it but it won't be high dollar.  A guy in his 20's or 30's wouldn't even think of not having a camera or electronics......wouldn't even cross his mind.

different strokes..........

Then BamaBass Frog blowups is the best video Tree Shaker edition I have ever seen made..The Music, Size of fish, and blow ups are just awesome.....

Highly recommend these 2 channels and I have no affiliation with either...

I completely agree. Russell does a great job on BamaBass! I also love Uncut Angling. If you haven't seen the 39 hours contest they did, you are missing out!

Regarding unboxings, I enjoy some of them. Ones where they show a wide variety of lures, talk about why they chose the baits they did, why this color works good in these conditions for them, and what brands they like and their experiences with them. They can be super informative for when I go to purchase tackle myself. The ones I don't like are where it's just a ton of the same stuff, or a bunch of sponsor-sent stuff. I think this is why Kickin' their bass TV irritates me so much. They guy has everything just handed to him and doesn't appear to put much thought into what he gets and why he gets what he does.

Vlogging is an interesting new art form. I think it's best thought of in that respect. It's very tricky and usually treads a thin line between "Really? you're posting a video of yourself driving, or yourself eating a sandwich, or yourself taking out trash" and interesting, informative, and artistic. Since it is that tough to get a lot of people wind up making stuff that you almost feel embarrassed watching. On the other hand Casey Neistat is an example, in my opinion, of someone who nails the vlog form. He doesn't include the extra mundane things, and each vlog has a center point or story to it.

Without sponsors this website wouldn't exist

This one website may or may not exists without sponsors. But don't kid yourself into thinking that sponsors are the only way these places exist. There are millions of YouTube videos with not one person sponsoring diddly and the same with websites. Anyone with a desire to create content and is serious about it can do it pretty reasonably. Sponsors are a way to expand and put the $ in your pocket for your time and effort.

I watch just for entertainment and no matter the age or experience of an angler you may always have something new to learn from them. I just like to see different peoples techniques and styles of fishing as it can make myself a better angler.

I was watching one of the Bass resource videos and the overly enthusiastic host was calling cover structure , I could not bring myself to watch anymore .

I've searched Youtube several times for certain techniques only to find a squeaky voice kid sitting at the table telling how to do it . LOL

Sorry if I offend anyone but some of the You Tube fishing stuff is just so dumb.......un-boxings.....wth? You mean I can't look at the same stuff on fishing tackle sites or my 5,000 catalogs I get in the mail every year? I have to watch some dufus open a box and describe what he bought? And how about the big fella  who used to be on here and now is "teaching the world to fish"? Ummmm....that's what all of the fishing shows have been doing for the last ooohhhhh say 50 years.....The Outdoor Channel, Bassmasters, FLW, Major League Fishing, Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston etc. etc.....I love it when someone thinks they are showing everyone something "new" when they are just repeating what has been out there for a very long time.......And how about the junkie? Claims to be a fisherman but his boat which is a few years old doesn't look like it has a scratch on it.....My boat is about the same age and I go 4 wheeling through brush, trees, shallow rocky areas, stump fields and anything else to find those little green fish.......bet I've caught a few thousand more fish than that guy because my boat gets used for what it was made for.......so looks like I will stick with the pros and the guys who really know how to fish......Just a silly observation on my part.

I think he may cry.

Ha! If you don't like it don't watch it. To get on here and speak negatively is no way to do it. I find the videos helpful especially the ones near my area. maybe you don't but come on. Respect takes you far.
