Is A Spare Spool Useful?

Recently purchased a quantum smoke 151 PT 6.6:1. I also got a 13 rod that is 7'3" MH and a tournament ZX 7'1" MH. I want to get a spare spool so I can have 30 pound 832 Braid and 15 pound PLine flouroclear. Should I get it? Thanks.

On the water, it's not useful at all. But to make your reel do more techniques over the course of a year? Sure. 

A new reel is more useful ??

I have had countless spinning reels come with spare spools.............

Most of my spinning reels can share the same spare spools so I keep them all loaded with my common main lines (6lb/8lb flouro and 10lb braid)...If I get a wind knot deep in the spool or some other damage to my line I can just swap it out with one of the spares.  I've only had to do that a handful of times, but it's nice to not have to ditch the reel for the rest of the day.  

Since I keep them all in the boat and they are interchangeable, I can also switch between 6lb and 8lb or between braid and flouro on the same rod/reel combo quickly if I want/need to...Have done that a few times as well.  

I've never gone out of my way to buy a spare though, I can only think of 1 spinning reel I've ever bought that didn't come with one.

Isn't the reel OP is talking about a baitcaster?

 

Anyways, I'm probably wrong, but in case I am not. For BAITCASTERS I think it can be useful to have a spare spool with different line. On my jig rod one spool has 40lb Power pro and the other has 20lb Sniper FC. That was if I am fishing heavy vegetation I can swap to the braid. Baitcasting spools are extremely easy to switch out so it really doesn't take more than a minute or two at the most. No reason you can't swap out while on the boat. Is it easier to have two set ups? Sure. But I'll take the extra 90 seconds it takes to swap then spend another 200 bucks for another set up. 

Spinning spools I would say are a little riskier to swap out in the boat IMO (have had pieces fall out and almost lost) but if you want to I don't see why not.

Is it bad to say I just have multiple combos?  I have some reels with spare spools but have never used them honestly

It's not bad to say, I have anywhere from 14 to 20 rods in the boat depending on when/where I'm fishing....And sometimes picking up a different rod is the easiest thing to do.  But if I want to change the line on a specific combo, I can do it quickly with the spare spools.  Like most guys I don't carry nearly as many spinning rigs as casting rigs, usually 4 or 5 at the most...So being able to switch out lines on them is a benefit to me.  Not a regular practice for me, but it's nice to have that option.  

I completely missed that the OP could be referring to a casting reel, but the idea is the same I guess.

As a co-angler the more options I have is critical to me. Spare spools is one of them.

When I bank fish and don't want to carry more than 3 or 4 combos, the extra spools come into play.  When I'm on the boat, I have no need for them since I have my full arsenal.

i'd rather just spool up with the braid and tie on a leader length of the 15lb fluoroclear when you wanted to use it.  the practicality of the 2 spools seems minimal to me.  i have spare spools for both spinning and casting reels, all of which are sitting in a box in my garage, never really used, ever.  honestly, i'd also be a little concerned about somehow damaging the spare spool when not in use and then it would really be useless, sitting in a box, in my garage....

There was a time nearly every bait casting and spinning reel came with an extra spool and most anglers never used them.

Skip the flouroclear and get something better like red label.  I tried flouroclear last year and had more break offs in a month than I normally do in a year, and the second it touched any rock it snapped.  If you are on a budget just get big game.

I never had a condition present itself so urgent and drastic that I just had to change my entire spool. Ok maybe a couple of backlashes a long time ago but another spool wasn't saving squat. Had to get the mess out just to see the spool much less remove it. As far as a fishing condition na no need.

I have several spare spools for my spinning and baitcasting reels, that doesn´t necessarily mean that I will use any of them right there on the water, on very few occasions I did use them but is not an everyday happening, but what I have done on a regular basis is swapping the spool for another one with different line before the trip specially if I know I´m going to be limited by the number of rods I´m going to be able to carry with me. So spare spools useful ? yes, a must ? not quite.
