So I've started off the summer not too bad at all. Averaging a few two pounders just about every time I'm out there. Today was the best of the year by far, however.

I headed down to my favorite fishing hole. It's four and half acre bank only pond with some pretty decent fish in it. Started off the day fishing a Baby Brush Hog (as per usual) in my favorite sprayed grass color. Caught three in the two pound range right off the bat. Quite a good start, eh?

After browsing BR last night, I realized a few lures stayed at the bottom of my tackle box totally dormant for months and even years. One of them, a KVD jerkbait, only saw action maybe once. I decided just for fun to pull it out and give it a few casts, despite plenty of algae cover. First cast, nothing. Second cast.. I feel a little tug and decide to set the hook. The fight started, and this fish could peel drag. He tried to find some weeds to hide in and even tried finding refuge down a drainage pipe. I was barely able to flip him ashore, and while laying on the bank, he spit the lure. I jumped down onto the shoreline and somehow got a hand around the tail just as he was wriggling back into the water. A few seconds later, I was elbow deep trying to get a grip on this d**n fish as it fought me (and finned me in the finger in the process...) Somehow, I wrapped it up and was able to flip it back onto the shore. With (my) blood all over my hands, the grass, and my rod, I got a weight and a quick picture.

The scale showed 4.21lb, ranking second all time for me behind my 6.37lb caught a couple of years back.

I decided to put the jerkbait away on that note, and went on to catch another eight fish on a combination of trick worms, more Baby Brush Hogs, and senkos. I finished the day with a total of twelve fish (another best on the year) with my buddy catching eight on the day.

That'll be a tough one to beat!

Lesson learned: don't be afraid to throw something random just for fun.

Why did you put the jerkbait down after that fish?!

I'm a little superstitious while I fish and just decided to quit while I was ahead. I'll definitely break it out more often, but a four pounder for that pond is about as good as you can get.

The algae there is almost unbearable for anything with exposed hooks also, so I was really just lucky enough to get a bite after jerking it just a couple times before it got too crudded up. Just didn't feel like dealing with it and kind of wanted to relax after that battle
