In short I like to drop shot when I can not get anything else going or the fish are playing hard to get... this is a incredible finesse tactic that can work when the fish have lock jaw.  Although this being said I also believe that the drop shot can be fished even on the best of days of fishing, I believe it is a very underrated/used technique.

Agree with you here. It always gets fish for me, even if they are tiny, it still gets bites. That being said, if there's any shot at a reaction bite, the drop shot goes immediately out of mind. It's a boring, tedious way to fish in my opinion - and it takes everything in my power to work the worm slowly and carefully haha.

As far as baits go, just about any 3-5" plastic will work well. The 4" straight-tail Roboworm is very popular among Bass Resource members. I use it a lot, as well as a 3-4" tube. 

However, the best bait for me has been a large, lively leech, hooked right behind the sucker. I love getting those bonus walleyes that come with it!

One thing I'll add to the above information...if my drop shot hook with nosed hooked worm is grabbing weeds, I'll use a light wire 1/0 EWG hook and Texas rig a trick worm. Makes it weedless and I've still get good hook sets

First and foremost the dropshot technique is extremely underrated and on the toughest days can help to win tournaments. Personally I use mostly  4 - 6 inch roboworms, with the occasional 7 if I'm fishing slightly heavier line and looking for bigger fish. Use your imagination and think outside the box, because there are a number of different plastics you can dropshot with. You can nose hook baits when you fish areas without a lot of timber or cover, but usually i'm texas rigging my worm on a trokar light wire finesse hook.

As far as rod/line are concerned I fish a 20 lb main line braid (usually suffix 832) with a 7-8 pound leader most of the time. As for the rod length I like a 6'10" to 7' Medium or Medium Light with a fast or extra fast tip. I've fished a number of rods, but the one I like the most is a Megabass Orochi F3-611XXS. This was a rod designed by Aaron Martens and has everything you will need.

I find the best time to fish dropshots are during the hotter days of the spring and summer, but I find even more success with this when confronted with cloudy skys or overcast conditions when fish are not as tight to cover or structure and are roaming. With that being said i have still had great days during blistering hot sunny days when the fish will not bite anything else. Hope this helps!

There are a few different ways of using it. You can either cast it, which is my prefered technique, or you can fish it vertically when you're over a fish, or a school of them. Most small plastics will work on it. I usually fish it when things are slow as it'll generate bites, but it's also in my lineup anytime smallmouth are present. They really seem to love the ds

I dropshot when the bite slows down, and if i'm fishing a little deeper and see suspended fish, I'll also powershot using a larger 2/0 or 3/0 hook with a trigged worm, super fluke or even a wacky senko.  For dropshotting, I like to get the bait to sit right above the submerged grass or structure.

 

Dropshot rod is a ML Mojo w/ 2500 Symetre and Powershot rod is a MHF Duckett MMP w/ Abu Revo S3000.  Both spooled with braid, 6# leader on the drop rod, and 10# leader on the powershot rod.  The MMP might be a bit of overkill but it is a very fast taper with a sensitive tip, and can still move bigger fish from deeper water.

To best answer your question, what kind of cover are you fishing? Open water drop shotting for smallies is quite different from "bubba" drop shot fishing in heavy cover for largemouths.
