Federico Li Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Hi guys, I bought a 6"6 Mh Spinning rod & reel set as my first rod - as I thought it'd be a good general purpose rod to start off with. I am considering buying a new baitcast setup in the near future, but am struggling a bit with the setup. Would appreciate any input! Here's my concern: I realized that a ml spinning reel setup for drop shots and other light setups + a mh baitcast setup for everything else with stronger lines and such may cover the most grounds - please correct me if I'm wrong. Now given that I alrady have a Mh spinning reel setup - is there a way I can select my second baitcast setup so I can cover the same grounds? Should I just get a ml for drop shot and finesse rigs? It seems like it won't be as optimal as the other way around. Fortunately I didn't buy a super expensive setup for my first rod - if any, I could sell it and buy a new setup? Quote
Super User Raul Posted June 2, 2016 Super User Posted June 2, 2016 Yes, you can select a BC setup to cover the same grounds, a MH rod would be perfect, nowhere is written that dropshotting has to be done hair thin line and a noodle as a rod, I dropshot with 15 lb test Big Game. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted June 2, 2016 Super User Posted June 2, 2016 I drop shot/wacky worm/shakey head on a mh 7' spinning rod. Is it ideal? No. But until I can justify getting a new rod it works just fine. For the baitcaster I would just take a look at what techniques you think you will be using the most in your area (are you going to be doing a lot of crankbaiting, or are you looking to fish a lot of jigs and t-rigs, or both? etc.) and get something that will handle those. And yes, you could always sell the original set up. I would just do it right the first time around for the baitcaster. You don't want to regret something and end up wanting to sell BOTH setups. Quote

No. I don't know from where people have got this idea that the "ideal" setup for dropshotting/wacky worming/shakeyheading is thin line and Mickey Mouse gear. Dropshot, wacky, shaky, heck, even split shooting are RIGS and there is no "ideal", or I should say, the "ideal" is the setup that allows you to fish those rigs efficiently depending upon the cover conditions ( type and density ) You don´t go ´round dropshotting/wacky/shakey with 6 lbs test here: 1 Quote

You can shakey head with a 1/2 ounce head and a 12" manns jelly worm, or drop shot with 50lb braid and a 4/0 flipping hook in super thick cover. And I'm sure those would catch fish, heck I'd even like to try those out sometime now that I think about it. But with the light wire spinshot hooks and 8lb line I use for dropshotting, or the tiny little heads I throw for ned rigging and shakey head fishing, a mh works, but I'd rather fish with a medium or medium light with that tackle. So let me rephrase my earlier comment, FOR ME, a medium heavy is not ideal for those techniques and how I rig them. Quote
