Super User fishballer06 Posted May 31, 2016 Super User Posted May 31, 2016 I have to be honest. I really haven't thrown spinnerbaits much at all in the past few years because I've been doing so well on chatterbaits. Whenever I used to throw spinnerbaits a good bit, I really liked the Terminator titanium one's because they worked well, ran straight, and they didn't get bent out of shape. Fast forward to yesterday and the conditions were absolutely perfect for a spinnerbait bite. However I only had one spinnerbait on me. A brand new in package V&M Cliff Pace big easy pacemaker. I had picked up this spinnerbait because it seemed very high quality, and it had a really nice wide gap hook on it. Within 5 minutes I caught a nice smallmouth around 2 pounds. Got him into the boat, and thumbed him in for the landing. I removed the hook and noticed that the wire was practically straight after just one fish. I bent the arm back into original shape the best I could, but I just couldn't get it to work properly any more. So I was stuck there in perfect spinnerbait conditions and no working spinnerbaits on me. A $7 bait ruined after one average sized fish. So I guess I'll restock on some spinnerbaits before this TW sale is over today. So I'm asking you all for your recommendations for a quality spinnerbait that has a durable wire, besides the Terminator titanium one's. What are your favorites? Quote

Super User Catt Posted May 31, 2016 Super User Posted May 31, 2016 Until you've throw a Stanley Spinnerbait you have no idea what a spinnerbait should feel like! Stanley Lures has combined two of their most innovative designs into a single spinnerbait for maximum thump and vibration–the Vibra Wedge! Two patents, the Vibrashaft wire and Wedge blades, combined to produce more water displacement than any other spinnerbait on the market. 2 Quote
MDBowHunter Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 I was using War Eagle spinnerbaits ( which are really nice ) until I bought a handful from Sieberts because I wanted Colorado blades instead of willows and I was very impressed. Next time I need some I'll be placing another order with Sieberts. 2 Quote
lakeannaangler Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 I also like the terminator spinnerbaits a lot and I dont really throw any other brand. The others I use are the war eagle finesse and war eagle screaming eagle spinnerbaits Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 i have two complaints about spinnerbaits: 1 light gauge wire that bends too easily 2 big blades make them rise in the water column when I'm trying to stay on the bottom and bump cover/structure. the Strike King Burner fixed both those issues. the willow blades are much thinner so they get down and stay down (they call them Raz-R-Blades). i doubt i'll ever use another SB. i like chatterbaits around weeds and SB everywhere else Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted May 31, 2016 Super User Posted May 31, 2016 t1 is my spinnerbait of choice, but aside from that, it's war eagle/war eagle finesse. Quote
S. Sass Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 I've had decent success with the Pepper Custom brand. I really like the hardware used. The swivel is smooth as silk, they have the nice stout hooks and I really really like the bait holder barb for trailers. Not to mention the skirts are really good at flaring on pause in water. My only dislike is the open line tie. I do not like the R bend as it's a cheap way to make a bait. Give me a closed line tie everytime please. The age and number of fish caught on the old school Mepp's ones I have is testament as to their ability. They are tough as nails and I can feel the thump on them all day. Spinnerbaits are a lot like crankbaits as each style has its goals in mind of what it is supposed to accomplish attracting strikes. Those with really light wire will bend but generally the ultra light wire was used to get maximum thump. Maybe the blades used didn't give much thump but wanted that specific pattern of flash so it was a compromise. This can also be compared to senko use. To get that specific senko wobble on the fall the bait is not very durable either. But we see that discussion a million times. Quote

Super User Raul Posted May 31, 2016 Super User Posted May 31, 2016 I have been throwing the exact same Strike King spinnerbaits for the past 20+ years, the only thing I´ve done to them is changing the skirts for new ones when the old ones are toast and sharpen the hook very now and then. 2 Quote

I have several old Strike King spinnerbats with the old style blades. Also have a bunch of blades to add to baits. The funny shaped willow leafs they use to make . 1 Quote

I can add that I have a ton of different makes and models with Stanley's, and Manns Classics being my favorites. The vibrashaft and wedges kick bass,..I also have a dozen Hart's that are single bladed colorados for thick covered areas and slow rolling., And another dozen or so 1 and 3/4 oz Hogstickers, these are my staples,.... As for strike kings I have a few of them too, but the ones i have are for specific conditions. Some other commendables? Fleck, Terminator, and Booyah When im fishing I have 50 or so different sizes and makes with me,,... and another 4 plano spinnerbait boxes at home, (i think theres 24 per box) 1 Quote

tje0705 Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 War Eagle. I always find myself buying some other brand because they are on sale or a little cheaper and all the do is sit in the box and never get used. I have the upmost confidence in War Eagle baits. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 1, 2016 Global Moderator Posted June 1, 2016 War Eagle is about all I throw. I tore them up a couple weeks ago on a white with copper blades 3/8oz War Eagle. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted June 1, 2016 Super User Posted June 1, 2016 I have made my own spinnerbaits for a long time, I purchase my own wire and bend the forms and pour the heads so I have total control. That said, I have tried all kinds of wire, from .029" diameter up to .041" diameter and I've settled on .035" diameter for most everything, even 1/4oz baits that I use to use .032" with. The reason is that .035 is the "balance area", that is what I call it, it is the diameter that is thin enough for good vibration yet strong enough that it won't get deformed to the point of being ruined by 1 decent fish. If I was going to buy a bait off the shelf, it would be a Stanley Wedge Plus, those are killer spinnerbaits!!! 1 Quote
