Bmorse1193 Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 With Fathers day right around the corner im looking to get my dad a nice spinning combo since fishing is one of the things that truly make him happy. Im looking to get him something really nice and was wondering if anybody had any recommendations of any combo's that they've personally had success with. I've heard that some of the bass pro combo's are very nice however all recommendations are extremely welcome. Thank you everybody for your time and guidance my friends! Quote
Bmorse1193 Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 My budget is around a couple hundred bucks however any cheaper combo's that still offer a superior quality would be preferable. Thanks! Quote
Kyhokie Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Shimano Sahara 2500 w/ fenwick HMG 6'6" med action 80$ for reel 90$ for rod. They are both on sale at TW. 1 Quote
Bmorse1193 Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 Thank you for the response however im looking to buy a combo specifically. Im aware that overall buying separately is generally better. However I would only be interested in buying a combo at this time. Thank you for your responses. Quote
fvogel67 Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 St Croix has a Triumph paired with a Diawa reel for around a 100 bucks. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 28, 2016 Super User Posted May 28, 2016 I don't like recommending combos as today they are directed at entry level anglers so you either get a decent rod and lower end reel or decent reel and low end rod. You can actually get a good rod and good reel for less that some combos that offer only 1 decent piece of tackle but if it has to be a comb then here you go. Cabelas has a Pflueger Purist reel paired with a Cabela's Fish Eagle 50 spinning rod on sale for $130, the Fish Eagle 50 rods are decent and the Purist is a lower end reel but not bad in the Pflueger line. A better combo at the same place would be the Cabelas Verano reel paired with a Tournament ZX rod, on sale for $220 and if both of those options are too much then the Pflueger Summit rre with the Fenwick Silver Hawk rod for $120. That makes your shopping for dad easy. Quote
edfitzvb Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 If it were I, I would pick up a Pflueger combo starting at the President level, with a Pflueger rod in the same class, medium action and 6 1/2 feet. Depending on budget, maybe further up the Pflueger scale, but my President has served me well, so I would feel fine giving one as a gift 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted May 29, 2016 Super User Posted May 29, 2016 Lots of combos you can look at at a Bass Pro, Cabelas, Gander Mountain, etc. Best thing is to get your hands on a rod/reel combo in a store to see how it feels in YOUR hands, not ours. We've got a ton of opinions here at BR. Some love brand X while some hate it, and so on. Since I have a BPS locally, I know they have deals on house rods with different reels, not necessarily house brand. So you can ask at the counter what reels can you offer as a combo with *this* rod and they'll tel you. Then put those reels on the rod you like and see how it balances out. That's very important. Your hands are not our hands, so you may not love what I do, and so on. Good luck. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 29, 2016 Global Moderator Posted May 29, 2016 If you can afford a couple hundred, I wouldn't buy a premade combo. Get a Pfluegar President, then you have 130 give or take to play with and get a nice rod. FWIW, I have a few Pfluegar President/Ethos combos that run around $120 if you pay full price for both that are nice, inexpensive spinning setups. Quote
