I work with middle schoolers and they think it's the coolest thing to see myself and other teachers "dab" I personally don't get it but whatever. So anyway, not one to pass up on a chance to have fun and possibly embarrass my kids at the same time I was wondering? My oldest daughter is graduating High School on Wednesday and because I work as a Paraeducator I get to hand her the diploma. My question, do I hand it to her by dabbing or do I respect the solemn institution of a commencement ceremony and do it the boring respectable way??

Hmmmm....

Dab.

At my eldest son's graduation last year, one
of the boys in his "cadre" said he'd trip on
stage if everyone gave him $20.

He did it, and it was hilarious. Couple thousand
people there, too. Collective gasp went up until
we realized what happened.

I think it is fun when the unplanned...or planned
fun happens to break the solemnity.

It is your daughter. Celebrate her, make it one
she will forever remember :)

Do it.  When i worked in the call center for a large bank i received an award that is given to about 25 call center agents out of about 10k i the country.  Fast forward to the awards ceremony....has about 300 of the big wigs there plus family and crap.  It happened that my director was handing out the  awards and when i got mine i gave him a huge hug and said i couldn't do it without you man....he lost it and so did everyone else.

It didn't hurt that his office was right near my cube and he was a cool guy for sure..

Don't do it. I cannot stand when someone takes a moment that is meant for someone else and tries to make it more about them (not saying you are intentionally doing that, but if I were just in the audience that's how I would see it). I also teach in a middle school and the kids tried every day up until the last day of school to get me to dab. I never did it. I guess I don't feel the need to try to get a bunch of 12-14 year old kids to think I'm cool. I think it looks stupid so I don't see why I should be talked into doing it.

We called it daps. Closed fist bumped on the top then bottom of another closed fist. Similar to a handshake but much cooler.

Like so, yo.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giving_dap

Dabs is something entirely different and probably not welcome to discuss here.

We fist bump at work. mainly because all of our hands are filthy but I don't know where the other guys hands have been so it works.

I wouldn't give her daps in front of the students or your peers during the ceremony thing. Definitely afterwards outside in the halls or something though.

Dabbing is one of the dumbest trends that I have ever seen and people look like foolish morons doing it.

With that said...do it. You'll look like a complete moron in front of the adults and staff but the entire student body will get a kick out of it and remember it for life.

Daps,  no. Twerking? Definitely.

When my daughter graduates, it's going down.

I must be getting old....I don't know a dab from a dap from a plank.  I could argue both sides....keep it (and yourself) 'respectable'.....or fun and memorable...as long as it isn't insulting or disrespectful.....

I guess if pressed, I'd come down on @iabass8side.  If not, you have to start asking where's the line going to be?  Humility rarely is the wrong choice.

Thanks for all the imput. I've been leaning on not doing it because as its been said here from others, it's about the kids and not some over the hill dad. I do not want to draw any attention away from her moment.?

Am I the only one who has a total different definition of what a "dab" is ? Lol. Maybe Washington Oregon and Colorado know. Along with some 14 +other states.

Don't do it, you won't do it right trust me.

My 12 year old son lets me know all the time that I am doing it wrong.
