Ben_Hambleton4 Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 I have a spinning rod with 10 pound mono line. I have a lot of cranks, both shallow and deep. Yet I know that bass are most known for areas in cover (usually shallower areas). So is there a point in using deep cranks out in the open in ponds and lakes? I have a lake house where I fish of the dock with deep cranks- it is usually 12 feet. So when should I use deep cranks, if at all? Thanks! Quote
Super User Angry John Posted May 28, 2016 Super User Posted May 28, 2016 The best time in your case is to fish a mid lake hump or rise. Are you running sonar? Quote

Super User Angry John Posted May 28, 2016 Super User Posted May 28, 2016 Cranks work best bouncing off stuff. The hit triggers the strike. Holes are not great but points shelf's and humps are money. Quote
JigMaster4 Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 I rarely if ever throw deep cranks. I prefer using other baits and have no confidence in deep divers, so I throw other lures. Quote

Airman4754 Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Pre-spawn smallies love them some deep diving crank baits. Quote

Bass aren't always shallow. Bass aren't always deep. Bass aren't always hunkered down on cover. Bass aren't always cruising open. Catch what I'm saying? During the phases where bass are deeper, there's nothing wrong with throwing a deeper crankbait. When the bass are moving shallower, there's nothing wrong with throwing a more shallow crank. What you should focus on is bass behavior. Getting a better understanding of how to locate fish will help you immensely when choosing lures. If you know that bass are out deeper in the hot summer months and only move shallow to feed (generally early morning and late evening) then you'll know when to go with a deeper crankbait and when to go with a shallow crank. The above holds true for ALL lures, not just crankbaits. Study up on bass behavior and you'll get a better understanding of what to use when and most importantly, where. 1 Quote
