Alan Reed Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 What typ of knot is best for typing a heavy test braid to a Flourocarbon leader? Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted May 26, 2016 Super User Posted May 26, 2016 Depending on who replies, the answer will likely be: Uni-Uni, FG, Alberto/Modified Albright, Albright, Seaguar, Blood, or J knot The best one is likely going to be the one you tie best. If you can't tie a good knot, it doesn't matter how strong someone else says it is. Personally, I pretty much stick to just the Alberto, with the random FG, Seaguar or 'J' knot thrown in for variety and testing purposes. -T9 7 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted May 26, 2016 Super User Posted May 26, 2016 i like the uni to uni, but team9 is right on in saying the best one is the one you tie best 1 Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted May 26, 2016 Super User Posted May 26, 2016 Best is a relative term and team9nine is spot on with his reply. I use the Albright Special due to how easy it is to tie and for me how strong it is. When out on a kayak and dealing with the waves, wind, and everything else I need a quick leader knot and this one fits the bill for me. It passes through all the guides on my rods 'semi micro' without any issues. I sometimes have a leader long enough that the knot is below the first guide when casting. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted May 26, 2016 Global Moderator Posted May 26, 2016 In the shallow, stained, vegitation filled soup bowl lakes I fish in down here I rarely tie a leader. The only exception would be when Carolina rigging which really doesn't answer your question. When I take the kids tho I will always tie a leader for them and use the uni to uni. "9" is exactly right. Super User MassYak85 Posted May 26, 2016 Super User Posted May 26, 2016 If I feel I NEED one on the water I usually go with a Uni-Uni and tie a short one. It's a really simple leader knot and works fine most of the time for me. If I am at home preparing to fish at a later date, I tie an FG and tie a long leader that will last many trips. Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 I only use the Alberto knot, but t-9 is right about using whatever knot you tie best. Quote
Yudo1 Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 My best knot is the alberto, but I'm going to experiment with the j and fg knot. Quote
Robert Riley Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 I use a uni-uni knot. I have issues, but I think it mostly stems from the braid being smaller diameter than the leader. Quote
loudcherokee Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 I've been using the alberto, but have been having issues with it lately for some reason. Lost 2 baits during cast from the knot either breaking or slipping. I'm going to start trying the uni-uni for awhile to see if I like that better. LC Quote
Super User Further North Posted May 28, 2016 Super User Posted May 28, 2016 FG here. Alberto in the few instances it won't work well (Knot 2 Kinky leader). Team9nine is exact right. Which one do you tie best? Quote

Super User Jar11591 Posted May 28, 2016 Super User Posted May 28, 2016 +1 for the Albright Special. Quote
Cgrinder Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 I use Alberto. Make sure you "set" the knot after cinching down by holding both stands of leader and pulling hard on the braided mainline. That prevents slipping. Tied properly it is a very small knot. Quote
