Fogle12 Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 I am having difficulties fishing an area where i know there are big smallmouth i have caught a couple but it is tough. I am fishing shallow water i can wade in but i have found a drop off that drops around 10-12 feet like in this picture but at the bottom is either a brush pile, a tree or something that i keep getting hung up in i have tried things like senkos and other weedless options but the water is moving to fast for it to sink and texas rigs the weight in getting hung up. Any help would be nice! Thanks Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 26, 2016 Global Moderator Posted May 26, 2016 Seems like a good spot for a heavy drop shot to me. That will get to the bottom fast and stay there but you can work the bait in place until you decide to move it. It should be pretty resistant to snagging as well. 1 Quote

Turkey sandwich Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 If you don't have a boat, that can limit presentations, but a drop shot can be excellent. Also a jig with a stiff weed guard or pegged T-rig can work as well. If you have aerial pics of the river, that might help with suggestions, too. Quote
CNYfishing Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 Ive fished many areas like this where a waterfall or something creates a deep dropoff usually i fish rivers and creeks for trout but what i do is find the drop of and cast a floating stick bait with a deep diving lip about 10-20 feet past the drop off and slowly reel in. The current will push the bait down in front of them. Then when you hit the face of the drop off just open your bail and let the bait float down stream then repeat the process. This works great for me when trout fishing Quote
UPSmallie Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Wow! This is almost identical to the river I fish! I posted a similar question as well. I'd say try some Rapala baits like the X-Rap or even jerkbaits like the Shadow-Rap. I've had luck with medium sized spoons trying to catch pike before also. Quote
