New to swim jigs...

I'm new to swim jigs I live in minnesota.  What brand, size, color do you guys suggest to get?  Also what trailers should I be looking at to get to add to these jigs.

I would start with two basic colors, white and bluegill. I use 1/4 oz for water 1-5 feet, and 3/8 for anything deeper than that. The most durable trailer that works great is the rage tail menace. I would get a pack of watermelon red, and a pack of pearl white. Siebert outdoors is a great source for both, I tie my own jigs but source the heads from him since they are such good quality.

There are 3 different types of swim jigs, well maybe more by now but I know of 3 and I make my own. There is the Northern Style that Tom Monsoor likes to throw, those are typically 1/4oz with a light hook and thin skirt, best trailers are grubs, flapping type craws and small swimbaits. Then you have the Coosa River style which is similar to the Northern but uses a slightly heavier hook and a little larger skirt and they often run 3/8oz, same type of trailers. Then you have the California style, these are larger, 1/2oz and up with heavy duty flipping style hooks and thick 55 to 80 strand skirts with larger body swim baits being the main trailers for those. I prefer the smaller 1/4oz and 3/8oz version but I do use a 1/2oz heavy hook model for heavy, nasty cover. These are like a finesse spinnerbait, they make very little disturbance but offer a nice body size for the fish to hit, and they do well in pressure situations when the flash and vibration of a spinnerbait will be too much for the fish.

^This^ ...What smalljaw said is a very good run down. Green pumpkin, bluegill, and perch type colors will all be excellent for MN waters. Lots of good brands to choose from. Siebert, Northstar, and Dirty jigs all make swim jigs with good color choices and components. I like Keitechs, RI little dippers, swimsenkos and single tail grubs as trailer choices.

I've settled on the Lethal Weapon IV swim jigs. They come through vegetation better than any other I have tried. I usually use a paddle tail swimbait about 4 inches as a trailer, but sometimes use grubs too.

The 6th Sense Divine swim jigs caught my eye at the local tackle shop over the winter.  Picked a couple up but haven't fished them yet, but they look great and the description on the 6th Sense site sounds good!

I use Northstar Swim Jigs pretty much exclusively in 5/16oz and pretty much use 3 colors. White, Black and Blue and New Gill, there are tons of colors out there so don't get overwhelmed with the colors.  For trailers I like swim bait style trailers the best, Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper, Big Bite Baits Cane Thumpers etc...I also use single tail and dual tail grubs and sometimes I even use Yamamoto Swim Senkos.

Tying swim jigs has became a new hobby for me. I don't really save any money, but I can make them in the exact colors I like, and the exact strand count I like.

I'm a huge fan of the M-Pack Lures swim jig. The weed guard design is awesome. Bluegill is an awesome color.
