Maryland baitcasting

Good morning, I'm a fairly new fisherman who wants to learn how to use a baitcaster. Video instruction is good but I learn and retain better buy doing. Anyone know of a place where I could go to get hands on instruction? I checked with BassPro but did not see anything, why they don't offer that with the purchase of an entry level caster is beyond me.

I am a novice with a baitcaster as well and I found that the YouTube videos by "The Informative Fisherman" to be a huge help.  They made with a more pulled out shot then most others so you can see more of the casting motion.

its not that hard. after one or two days i felt pretty comfortable. yeah youre going to get nasty birds nest but i find that having your thumb on the spool while its casting helps prevent that a lot,

For me it was totally misunderstanding casting technique, once I saw how others did it, everything started clicking and I was able to start practicing the correct way.

If you want some tackle help give me an e-mail direct to fishnkamp@comcast.net.  We can meet up near my house and after a little help on land,  we can launch my boat for a little on water practice (read as fishing). I live in Middle River, near Martin State airport, so I can be in the water in a few minutes.  Make sure to bring your equipment, but you may need to use mine, depending on what you are trying to use.

This is the one thing about fishing that I cannot teach? I taught myself how to use one about 30 years ago now it is just like breathing.

I bought a fly reel a few years back at BPS and asked the salesman a stupid question about something or other and the next thing I know, he's giving me casting lessons right down the middle of the aisle.  I'd just go down there and ask the salesperson for some tips and see what happens.  I must admit, I was a little self conscious whipping a fly down the aisle with an audience, but it was worth it.

However, I'd bet that a few days on the water with your new baitcaster would be enough. Worked for me.

More than you with your car shows! At least my boat not running right is a reason where are all the pics of the fish you have been catching this year?

I just watched some videos and went in the backyard and practiced with just a sink weight attached.  I put buckets at different distances and kept practicing. Eventually the bird nests will stop and you get better with practice.

I would to start set the brakes all the way up and adjust when needed. Use mono to start and let out about one or two cast worth of line and put electrical tape on the spool. This will help with backlashes so when you get one you don't have to go all the way down to the spool to pick it all out. Best of luck and tight lines.

I tried, he never answered back.  I learned from some good anglers and enjoy sharing that ability.  It is fun to meet someone on an open green lawn, help them learn and then go hit the water.  Somethings are far easier to learn in person.

It is the worlds best guides do every day.

By the way I like the bend in that flyrod

oops, didnt realize the post was that old. I liked fishnkamp's offer anyway. Cant beat that offer. I commend you fishnkamp for how helpful and informative you are. I fish out of a kayak but am dieing for a bass boat (not there yet). so i frequent the boat section. I constantly see you helping others and you are extremely informative. When the time comes and im looking to buy a boat, i will look for you for all questions i may have. Your knowledge is vast and its obvious you enjoy helping others. One of many helpful individuals on this great forum!!
