Parking tickets...

So, I live in Milwaukee Wisconsin and parking downtown for work is a *****... There is not nearly enough parking for the people who work / live down here. Last night I got a ticket for parking "too close to a crosswalk". It wasn't a designated crosswalk, no lines, signs, nothing. I was a good 10 feet away anyways, but the ticket says "must be 15' away". Such ***.

 

What am I gonna do? I am gonna pay the d**n thing in dimes.. Supposedly the state doesn't have to accept anything under dimes for a fine above 25c. 

300 dimes should work just fine.

 

Anyone else have issues like this? I am tired of not being able to park for work without getting shafted by the man.

I am not saying break the law - but here in TN, parking tickets are not required to be paid, as they cannot prove who the driver is.  The city/state sees it as "bonus money" when one is paid.

What are you gonna do?.....You can move out here to DC. 

This pic was taken on a Sunday at 1:50 PM.  You should see what happens on this street at 2:01.  The meter maid has tickets on every one of these cars by 2:04.  Apparently they're supposed to all come out and switch to parallel between 2 and 2:01.

Signs like that are for the most part Shot & Ignored.

In Wisconsin, the tickets are mandatory. If you don't pay, the car's registration is and the persons name on the title is suspended.

I learned my lesson in a former life. I was working on a job at a hospital and university complex in St Louis. I could get in early and park at a meter, and the fine for the day was less than the cost and hassle of parking in a garage. I would go once a week and pay my fines. What I didn't know was that once you got over a couple of outstanding tickets they put you on the "tow" list. 

I came out one day to see my company van being hooked to a tow truck. When I tried to convince the local police officer that I would pay all the fines and he should let me go, he told me I had two choices, either let them tow my van or go to jail. I said if I go to jail you are still going to tow my van. He agreed, and I realized that I was about two words away from being cuffed. By the time I paid a"dangerous" hookup fee, towing, impoundment, fines and penalties it cost me $400 and a half a day of jumping through hoops. 

In the movie Cool Hand Luke he ends in  prison, and ultimately dead for messing with the parking system. Don't let this happen to you!

Tickets are ridiculous here.

Once I do decide to leave I might jump my GTI like them good ol boys

Decades ago, Larry Flynt had two strippers carry in bags of pennies to pay a $10,000 contempt of court fine.  If I recall correctly, the judge made him sit in a vacant office adjacent to the courtroom to count & stack all of the pennies.  Once that was complete, the judge fined him $10,000 for contempt of court again...

Something about police and judges having a lack of sense of humor. Seems all of them have their underpants climbing more often than not.

Police and military guys are some of the funniest people I know. In the case of LEO's, we have a tendency to have a twisted sense of humor, so it has to be reigned in around the GP or risk getting complained on for being unprofessional. If you ever get to be the fly on the wall in a group of cops telling stories and jokes though, can almost guarantee you'll laugh harder than any comedy show. Stuff happens on the day to day that is unbelievable to most anyone who hasn't been there. Every time I think I've seen it all, it's like someone goes out of their way to prove me wrong. 

Judges on the other hand, haven't met many of them with much sense of humor.

Oh I have police in the family and I hear the stories. Yeah I see the keeping it professional but there is a middle ground, many seem to go full tilt a hole.

Yeah, there's some of that too. I can only speak for my area that most aren't like that here. I could see getting to be like that in a bigger city though.

Blue generally speaking, I like cops. I know a couple well and have great respect for the work they do, and their ability to conduct themselves professionally in situations where most of us would not. 

The danger of dealing with criminals/idiots on a daily basis is getting jaded and cynical. This does not happen to all, but is too common in some jurisdictions.

My cousin is a township cop in a nearby town. He stopped his own mother for rolling thru a stop sign. She threatened to shoot him with his own gun. He didn't give her a ticket. lol true story.

Take pictures of where you were parked and all the signage around it. You should have an area to check in the ticket where you can object to having been issued the ticket. Submit the photos and a written description to why you think the ticket was given in error. 

I do a lot of work in Washington DC and made a left turn on to 14th street from the south portion of Pennsylvania Ave and got lit up and pulled over close to the new black history museum. The officer asked me if I made that turn and I replied "yes", then he asked me if I saw any reason why I shouldn't have made that turn on to 14th street. My response was "no, in fact, I think I've done it a number of times." So he grabs my DL, registration and proof of insurance and walks back to the car. I'm thinking what in the blazes is going on!!

he comes back and explained to me that he has to give me the ticket and that it's considered a moving violation that is a $200 fine and a point off my liscense. I'm thinking holy hell, my driving record for the last 25 years has been spotless. He then pulls out his phone and tells me to go back to the intersection and take pictures of 2 signs that are very misleading. One of which was a no U turn sign and under the red "do not" part, the arrow of the "no left turn" part was obscuring and covering! The other sign was showing the ability to take a left turn but underneath it described it as having the ability to take that left turn, get this, on the next street!!! 

The officer helped me out in a huge way and pictures and a written description helped me not only in keeping my driving record in good shape but saved me money in not paying the fine or possible increased insurance!!
