Super User ChrisD46 Posted May 24, 2016 Super User Posted May 24, 2016 Here's a twist : What is the WORST application for a Braid main line + FC / Mono leader where you believe you are much better staying with a straight FC or Mono main line ? ...We have all heard about the happy applications of those who have switched to a Braid main line + a FC or Mono leader , now I want to hear about those applications where you believe you do better with a FC or Mono main line ? Let's hear it ! ... Thanks in advance . Quote
Oklahoma Mike Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Weightless senkos - I used to fish them braid with a leader but have now gone to using straight FC. 3 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted May 24, 2016 Super User Posted May 24, 2016 There was a time where I fished my spinnerbaits at night on braid with a mono leader. However, I was setting the hook way too fast and not letting the fish get the bait, missing many strikes. Switching to a softer rod helped a little but once I went back to a mono main line, my hook up ratio went up substantially. Now when I "Feel" the fish getting the bait, I just keep reeling until it feel the weight of the bass, then I set up on her. And since the line is hidden by the cover of darkness, I can bump up the test (18-20lb) which definitely reduced the stretch. On the other side of this concept, adding a nylon line leader to braid when making a presentation into very heavy weeds, slop or grass is counter productive, at least for me. Here straight braid gets the nod ~ Frogs, Jigs, Texas Rigged anything & Punching rigs. A-Jay Quote

Tim Kelly Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 I don't like braid for any situation where you're fishing slackish line, especially in wind. 1 Quote

I'd one up this and say any plastic where you depend on a good falling action from the lure. If you use weightless braid OR mono or a combo of both, it doesn't matter. The bait will just fall backwards, looking completely unnatural. FC, when I started using it for this application, greatly increased the number of finesse bites I got. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 24, 2016 Super User Posted May 24, 2016 The only application I use braid is heavy aquatic cover that braid line cuts through. 95 % of my bass fishing is with straight FC for jigs and worms and mono for crankbaits, top water, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, wake baits etc. Tom Quote
blckshirt98 Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 I have a reel spooled with straight FC that I like to throw chatterbaits and medium sized crankbaits on. The FC helps the baits get down in the water faster since braid likes to float and take it's sweet time to get down into the water. Quote
Cgrinder Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Slack line presentations, especially when the wind is blowing. Quote
