Kittery Trading Post has 30% off when you spend >$300. Lots of exclusions, but Yeti isn't one of them if you've ever wanted one but couldn't allow yourself to pull the trigger at full price.

Honest question - what are you using these ultra fast reels on?  I've never owned anything faster than 7.1:1 - but I just bought a 8.3:1 Fuego that my thought is to put it on a 7'3" heavy for Jigs, and frogs. Wanna make sure I'm not missing the boat of a different setup.

Frogging, punching, and sometimes buzzbaits.  Frogging and punching it's simply for the line retrieve when you've hooked up with a fish, but more specifically in the slop or thick vegetation.  It makes a huge difference when frogging on grass mats, and punching in really thick mats like the kind here on the Cali Delta.

Well

I bit the bullet and ordered 2 LTBs. A TBC68MXF and a TBS610MLXF ?

I really wanted MF in casting rod but they didn’t have it

I am in need of new tackle: 175$

A new Spinning Combo: 400$

And 2 casting reels: 200$

And i only have 125$ saved + some christmas stuff

What do I do? I was thinking of getting either a new casting reel, and asking for baits, or vice versa. What do I do?

I was going to buy the TBS68MXF but as soon as I added to the cart, they were out of stock. So...I ordered the TBS71MF. I went on the St. Croix site later today and they had the TBS68MXF in stock again... oh well. I can do everything I wanted to use the 6-8 for, but jerkbaits and skipping won’t be ideal, but I think I have more of an all around spinning rod now... I hope it’s nice!

I’d say you pick the baits and have Santa get you the stuff that can’t be messed up like the rod and reels.

Wow the St Croix online sale kinda sucks. Only 30% off legend tournament?! My local tackle shop knocked them down 50% off. Glad I snagged a few there instead of waiting for the Cyber Monday deal.

Give me an example of the rods sticker price and discounted price. I’m curious how much better of a deal you got.

That is not a bad idea, although santa usually gets my list and orders the baits while i sit on his lap...

On a serious note that is not a bad idea, although i will freak out if i miss a better deal.

thank you for the advice and i will consider that...

One way to save some dough is go cheaper on the spinning combo. While I have two St Croixs, Eyecon and Premier, I find myself using my ugly sticks with 20 to 30 buck reels the most. I have a couple of Shakesphere Excursion reels that have lasted me ten years of hard fishing and run 20 bucks.

as for tackle, when on a budget, get only what you know you will use next year, this of course is impossible to decide lol. Try to limit buying anything that does the same thing as tackle you already own

Personally, I'd go with rods and reels as a big ticket item and then pick up baits/lures one or two a week over the winter. This keeps it economical and also provides an excuse to go to the tackle shop on a regular basis. I force myself to only purchase one or perhaps two items per trip, it makes sure you stay selective and don't fall into the 'one of every color' trap that the Bait Monkey likes to lay.

What did you have in mind for a 400 dollar spinning combo? I'm all for buying what you can afford, but it seems like you can't really afford that right now lol. If I were you, I'd go on TW and get whichever 75 - 100 dollar (ish) rod you like, grab a pflueger president, you'll have yourself a nice combo for around 100 - 120 bucks, use the rest for your most anticipated baits. Then see if you can get the baitcasters as gifts, and like @Spy said, just grab the rest of your baits (and line for rods) as you can afford it piece by piece.

don't feel like you have to get a cardiff you definitely don't need a round reel to fish swimbaits.

I wouldnt say i feel like i have to. From what i see people recommend, it is possibly the best value. Its priced pretty good and gives me capabilities to go to bigger swimbaits if i choose to. This will be a technique specific set up so i wont need a reel that can pull multiple duties. Just seems like a good buy and good for swimbaits. I dont have any real big baits yet, but i can see me slowly adding 8 and possibly 10" in the future. And i want a reel that will last me.

i would try to go to a local place or even bass pro if you have one around and hold it and compare it to a daiwa lexa 300 if you can just for something in more of a low profile type shape and see which one is more comfortable

Favorite Rods has the White Bird rod and reel. 49.99 for the rod and 39.99 for the reel, with their BF deal I bought my rod and reel combo for 68 bucks. :)

Watch the eBay auctions. I managed to pick up a Cardiff 301 brand new, still in the box for $75 shipped on there.

sorry for the late post, but for the west coast guys still checking this, great deals on powellco.com for Powell rods.

Thanks for this! Powell is actually running the sale through sunday Dec. 3rd. I was able to get my local Field&Stream to price match the sale no problem, and used a 10$ off coupon to pick up an inferno 6103 MEF for 53$

I def plan on doing this. I have looked a little and see good prices. Im pumped to potentially be under $200 for the set up. How do you like the cardiff? Your first round reel?

Yeah, it's my first round baitcaster. I didn't get too much time to play with it yet. I got a little too crazy on my first outing and had a wicked backlash within the first 5 mins. It seemed smooth and easy to cast though, I was just being a dummy. The only thing I didn't like is the drag. It seemed like you really have to crank it to lock it down. I'm going to send it to DVT in a few weeks though and have it super tuned, so that area should be resolved with that service.

I second that sentiment about the Cardiff. It's a good reel but I feel the same way about the drag. But your the price I don't think it can be beat for tossing the highest baits. I use mine with a heavy okuma guide select for treble hook baits and twenty pound CXX. I also have a Lexa and it is also a good reel. Definitely more refined but it also has it flaws. If I were you unless you got an insane deal on the Lexa I'd stick with getting the Cardiff.
