TW sale order, picked up Daiwa reel and some bait monkey items. Got the reel with the discount!!!

Does the discount come off before you check out or do they refund the difference after on Daiwa?  Its confusing to me.

When you check out it is full price, when you get the email receipt it reflects the discount.

Whaaaaat? I still haven't got mine; how come you're faster than me??  Thanks for confirmation. To be honest, I wasn't 100% sure if it would go through.

All their strike king stuff is 20% off too. I placed a sizable order of strike king and Zman items, all 20% off. Even better than tackle warehouse 15% off.

Just about everything is consistently a couple bucks off.

I recommend getting signed up for there email newsletter, lets you know when they do these sales every week.

You have to be careful with Discount Tackle. They jack the retail price up on stuff so it looks like you're getting a better deal than you are.

For example, the KVD 1.5 retails for $6.49 at places like TW and Bass Pro Shop. At Discount Tackle, they list it for $6.99. So when they announce 20% off, that knocks it down to $5.59. With the 15% off at TW, it comes in at $5.51.

Interestingly now that TW has raised their prices on Rage with the 5.99 price for a menace it’s now 5.09 with the sale, while Sieberts everyday 5.29 price is still looking good. TW is getting less of my money because of the high price points on stuff like rage vs other sites. I remember the days I could get Menace grubs under 4 on sale. As far as any store goes I always look at the final price not the discount. Amazon is the worst as you can find multiple listings for the same products with different prices.

I just bought powerpro on amazon for like 20 bucks and TW was like 27. Amazon got my money. When it comes down to dollar or less differences, I'm not quite as picky but go after family owned or convenience. Obviously supporting someone family owned like Siebert is more important than supporting the behemoth of amazon.

If I bought from TW, I'd expect real Powerpro.  If I bought from amazon, 50/50 it's counterfeit.

I am very very leary of '3rd party sellers', but even if it is sold by amazon.com and not a third party seller? I bought mine and it was sold by and shipped by amazon, not a third party seller.

I didn't know that people were getting that much counterfeit powerpro from amazon. Good to know.

Kistler is running a good sale right now.  45% off when you buy 3 rods/reels.  I know folks are critical of the price hikes on his rods this year (myself included) but this is a great deal.  3 KLX's for $495 puts them at $165 ea.  You'd be hard pressed to find a better rod out there for that price.

Has anyone ever given their reels a spin? I never hear them mentioned around here. That deal is tempting for the rods.

I just got the motivation to start building my own rods...so , after seeing the sale in this thread, I decided to see if these reels are acceptable. I only took the chance since their sale has them at $74.23 ea.

For background info... I do not or have ever bought expensive high dollar reels... so I cannot compare. As you will see from the pics I am still using one the first gen BPS extreme reels from 15+ years ago.

I received these (series 2, did not care about a carbon handle... line indicator nut cover... or drag washers that I could upgrade at a later time).

To start I broke one down just enough to see what I was getting... (I did not clean or re-lube  anything)

spacer.png

spacer.png

I would say this is almost equal to any other reel I have had.

The drive internals are more or less comparable to any other reel I have used,

but the difference comes when comparing the breaking mechanism.

These Kistlers are a single action friction system you can adjust with the dial.

spacer.png

When inertia swings the outer black pieces this pushes the white/clear  pieces against the circular brass cone.?.

This is a first for me using this type.

What I am used to is-

BPS extreme... (single control)

 spacer.png

Or Lew's Tournament MB Speed Spool... (duel control)

spacer.png

I took two of the reels to the lake today. One on a spinnerbait/chatterbait rod, the other on a small swimbait rod. (for reference I did not lube or clean either reel like I normally would have.  I wanted to see what they were like straight out of the box)

To start... I found them very picky about dialing in adjustments to cast to be @ there best. One of them casted much easier and farther then the other without trying to backlash but I think cleaning/lubing both reels myself would help both of them.

... drag was adequate since the largest bass caught today was only 2#

... I did like the longer handle than I normally use. That was a +

... I knew getting the Series 2 with its matt finish would not look as clean as the series 1 and its gloss paint. Finger prints & garlic spray easily showed.  But I'm a user, wear and boat rash is expected over it's lifetime... If taken care of (cleaned/lubed) it will work no matter what the exterior looks like.

I also have BPS Pro Qualifier reels acquired during spring fishing classic a few years back when they were $49.99.

Overall with one days of fishing I would place this in the middle ground... It comes down to only having a single breaking mech.

I don't think I would put it quite up there with the pro Qualifier 2 that's $99.99

And my Lew's seem much smoother to me ( but I have cleaned/adj. them since new)

I would say for the $74.23 total ea I paid, I got exactly what I thought I would get.

Would I like to try a Daiwa Steez SV TWS? Absolutely, but I don't have the bank for that, so I'm happy with what I do have.

Hope this info helps a little bit.

What a great review and break down of the brakes. I am in the same boat and my most expensive reels are Lews Speed Spool LFS and Shimano SLX XT and I like them alot and dont need bells and whistles. Ive been seeing more about Kistler but I learned more from this post than anywhere else!

How's that part of it coming along?

I like it so far... I'll post in the rod building section later when I am farther along.

Started with acquiring a Turnkey 7' casting kit from MudHole along with 2 clearance blanks, a MHX Spinning, extra glue/epoxy, thread etc.

So far I have only installed the handle on one of the clearance blanks and tried my first wrapping of any sort...I'll tighten the thread up a little more before Prokote.

haven't got to the guides yet....

 Thanks for asking.
