eBay has the 8% back in bucks on $25 or more and 6% back on all purchases. I figure if your shopping anyways and you see the promo at least enable it before you purchase. It's not a huge discount, but every bit helps in the end. It's coming up to the end of the eBay bucks quarter so you'll only need to wait until shortly after the 1st for the certificate.Ā

They just jacked up the $$ so it ends up being no bargain.

I notice that DSG does that a lot. Advertises a % off, but they've jacked up the MSRP so that the % off price is either the normal price at other places or still higher. Even though it's the closest 'big box' sport shop to me, I don't go there anymore.

They always have their jackhammers at 19.99.. So you barely save money after the sale compared to TW.. I don't usually buy anything from them based off of principles.. Great bladed jig though!

This is short notice but kittery trading post has 25% off ending tonite. They're not a bass centric tackle haven but do have some decent stuff i.e. megabass eligible.

Walk away from Dick's - reg price there 4.99; reg price TW or FishUSA 3.99

Ā

All the soft plastics at DSG are inflated in price except for their home brand: 'Field and Stream'

That's my 'sneaky' purchase place.

Scored all kinds of 'hard to find' gear there over the years.

I don't mean to turn this into a DSG bashing thread as I have found some legit good deals there in the past, but I agree that the majority of time, their "deals" bring the price closer to industry average vs. a true discount. However, my real beef with them is their shipping practices...atrocious. On two separate occasions, I've ordered a rod and a rod/reel combo from them and they shipped in a thin, unsupported, rectangular box with a few pieces of newspaper type material for "protection." Now, I lucked out and both rods were in fine shape upon delivery outside of the Lews Mach I rod having one slightly bent eye, but based on the pack job and condition of the box, I was simply lucky. The other rod was a 2 piece 6'6" Okuma UL, the box, no fooling, was CUT IN HALF...lengthwise, like with a circular saw clear around, and then taped back together with a single strip of clear tape. I wish I had a picture...My only explanation is that this was the last box in the entire shipping center, they assumed they could fit it broken down in half the box (you know, to save half a box, it was their last one and all), but needed an extra inch or two, so put the 2 PIECE 6'6" UL rod BACK together, shoved the two ends of the box together, and rolled some tape around it. I also get 7 different boxes on 3 separate days for a $50 order of assorted lures and tackle...

Thanks for the hot tip on the vengeance rods at Walmart. Found a med and med heavy casting for $15 each. Hereā€™s my contribution to the tread:

Baitmate $1Ā (garlic and salt)

Baitmate dip $1.50Ā

*mods, just trying to save people a buck. Sorry if against rules

Were those Vengeance rods 6'6" or did they actually have any 7'0?

I'm curious how the clearance pricing works at Walmarts - why there's such wide latitude in pricing. ļ»æThe one near me that used to be best for fishing had a guy that worked in that department, he was there all the time behind the counter where the guns and stuff were, and there was a clearance section with good deals. He disappeared a couple years ago, and so did the good deals. I wonder if there is a sporting goods department manager in these stores with the good clearance deals like the one @Maxximus Redneckus mentioned.ļ»æ

After looking at a wide selection of stores around the country for several years, talking to managers, etc, this is my theory about it:

- Stock and pricing are primarily dictated by corporate, on a store by store basis.

- I guess computers do a lot of the stock and pricing decisions.Ā  They don't have a person sitting in an office deciding when to reduce pink creme worms at store 7584 in Wichita from $3 to $0.50.

- Late winter/early spring, the stores are issued "mods" - with nice paper plots that show them how to lay out the gear for the next season.

- They determine which items in which stores will go on clearance, what the prices will be, and when they will drop in price.

- The stores just try to keep up with labeling the prices, setting out tags,Ā culling clearance from the revised display, and displaying the items where their store determines they can/want to (usually they struggle to keep on top of this because they're overwhelmed with stuff to do).

- There will beĀ certain items that tend to be targets for clearance - examples are the rods the guys are noticing above.Ā  So, if corporate decided to target clearing out 6'6' Vengeance Spinning, they will start putting those on sale at certain stores (not all).Ā  If you find a certain item (take, say, KVD 1.5's in shad) at $1.50 in one store, those will be targets for clearance at other stores.Ā Ā

- What happens is over the course of a couple of months, the prices will drop in "steps" until they hit rock bottom

- After hitting rock bottom they will do one of the following: 1.Ā  sell out, especially if the store is near a lake or has heavy traffic for another reasonĀ 2.Ā  send somewhere for re-distribution or liquidation 3. languish until sold 4. toss in the trash 5. jack the prices back up and put back in regular display (case in point, senkos were $2 in a store near me a couple weeks ago.Ā  They are now about $8 again).

*Exception: store managers can and will override clearance pricing.Ā  For example, found some KVD cranking rods that were on clearance with tag dated years ago - price rang up at current display price!Ā  They agreed to knock the price back down to modern clearance pricing.

Happy hunting!

**Just want to emphasize: the great prices you get at one store may or may not be the same that can be found at another store, regardless of the store location.**

How do I convince Walmart to lower the price of a rod that has been sitting there for years

Just ask to speak to the manager. Explain that this rod has been there for years, nobody has bought it and would he sell it to you for 50% off (or whatever...maybe you offer a certain price). The worst he can do is say no but more than likely he'll cut a deal just to be rid of the rod. Worth a shot.

Agreed.Ā  Has worked for me on many a rod.Ā  I think it helps to point out the sticker price dates from last decade.Ā  I usually quote the prices guys are reporting on this thread.Ā  :)

Ā

Arguably, it would be better (less effort andĀ a new, quality rod) if I just bought direct online - butĀ trying to get deals is a sport, too.Ā

Normally they range from an OKĀ to poor deal, depending on the bait included.Ā  The better YUM deal is to get 5 full packs for $10 when DSG runs that deal, which has been periodically.Ā  Otherwise, you can get more baits for $3 about the same per unit price.Ā  The main benefit of the Walmart YUM pricing is to get uncommon baits without having to pay shipping from Lurenet or TW.Ā  Watch for times when the price drops to $1 or so - but you never know when that will be.
