Hey guys.. I need help with 2 baitcasters setups..

What type of rod and line do you suggest for:

1. Spinnerbait / Buzzbaits

and

2. Top waters like Zara spooks, poppers

thanks!

For topwaters, other than buzzers and frogs, you can't go wrong with mono.  It floats, has some stretch so you don't tear the trebles out of the fish and maintains a good percentage of its rating if it gets nicked.  Unless you'll be using smaller/lighter lures, a M/H mod.fast action rod should handle the task nicely

For spinnerbaits and buzzers, go with your line of choice. You will want to go to a heavier lb. test as that single hook takes  more force to set than a treble hook.  For the same reason, you'll want a rod with a little more tip. A M/H fast action will handle this well

Sensitivity is not a major concern with any of these presentations and If funds are tight, your spinnerbait rod can double for topwaters, just be sure the fish has the bait (whichever rod you choose) and go easy on the hookset

The mods may move this to the rods, reels, line and knots forum where it will get more looks.

I use a med action rod for topwaters. I feel that the lighter action gives those treble hooks a better chance of digging in. Definately a med heavy for spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. I still use mostly mono on almost all my rods,  But then yet im getting old and old habits die hard.

I did however buy a spool of flourocarbon, and another of braid, this spring,..Just been waiting to finish off the boat before i get out and decide what im going to use them new lines on

For spinner baits I use a 6'-6" med. action rod with 14lb. Trilene XT. IMHO, this is the best setup for spinner bait fishing. I fish a lot of spinner baits.

For topwater baits I use one of two different set ups. For smaller baits, I like a 7' med. action rod with 12 or 14lb. XT. For larger baits, I'll use a 7' med. heavy rod with 14lb. XT.

YMMV

Normally 12# mono or co-polymer because most of the time I will be using a MH rod.  Lighter lures on Medium rods get the same line except in 8# although I am trying out 10# in a couple different brands.
