Super User the reel ess Posted May 23, 2016 Super User Posted May 23, 2016 I bought a Tourney ZX Frog model rod back in December and the butt cap has fallen off twice. I glued it on once, but I think I lost it this time. Anybody else had this happen? I've only caught a few fish with it and none on the frog yet. It also was my jig rod. I'll return, but don't want another if the cap will fall off it too. Quote
SMITTY0045 Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 My father has the 7'1" model and he as fished it pretty hard over the last 3 or so years, no issues at all. I think it would be worth exchanging it at Cabela's, I think it just may be a defective model. I have fished the rod myself and I can say it is definitely a high quality rod Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted May 23, 2016 Super User Posted May 23, 2016 I wouldn't get too worried about it. The Butt Cap is just cosmetic. I would be embarrassed returning a rod just because the butt cap fell off, If you glued the cap on and it fell off again, next time make a wiser and more reasoned glue choice. Easiest solution is to go get a chair leg cap that fits and install. You can also take this opportunity to put washers/quarters/what have you to tweak the balance of the rod if you want. I've done this a few times with rods even when the butt cap didn't come off - just wanted to tweak the balance point some. For re-installing the cap, I think that electrical tape works better than glue for this purpose. Option # next would be the Performix liquid plastic handle coating. Both these options have color options. I like my rods to have different color handles because it saves time a little bit wen I'm looking around the deck for a particular rod. Quote
Super User Raul Posted May 23, 2016 Super User Posted May 23, 2016 Contact cement, put a nice coat on both ( the rod and the inner part of the cap ) allow to "dry" and then put them together. It will never come off again. Quote
Yudo1 Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 It's purely cosmetic and has absolutely no effect on performance. If you like the rod otherwise just fix it and fish on. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 23, 2016 Author Super User Posted May 23, 2016 I'd really rather have a MH with a little more tip. I can't glue it back on this time because I can't find it. It could be in the back of my buddy's boat. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted May 23, 2016 Super User Posted May 23, 2016 If it's under warranty, I'd take it back and exchange it. No reason for it to fall apart other than manufacturer defect. Yes some are saying it's only cosmetic, which is true, but you bought the rod with the understanding it wasn't going to fall apart within a few months. Quote
punch Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Dude, just walk into Cabelas with the rod.. go to Customer service and ask for an even exchange. They always do it for their in-house rods. Even if the rods technically out of warranty they are usually willing to let you do a swap if there is an exact rod on the shelf. They ask if you have a recipt (no I don't) and when you bought it (sometime last year). They recently made some changes on their computers that removed the ability to look up historical purchases past a certain date so they can't verify anything anyways. I've had two ZX rods tha have had issues and i've been able to easily exchagne them straight up. I had one that had a broken tip a few weeks ago, and they swapped it. Last year I had the same butt-cap falling off issue and they swapped it. 1 Quote
