OperationEagle Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 Very slow again today. The fall bite eludes me....at least a steady one. wt was at 56-58. Nothing seemed to be up shallow. I wonder if the cold snap drove the baitfish deep? Quote

Seriously,,,Fiske is probably the only lake in OtterTail Co. to have a 24" bass turn up in a DNR fish survey. Pike's-ville yesterday....10 or more with two 26 inchers, one 27, and this one at a little over 29. 8 or 9 bass all under 13" although did lose a decent one on the jump. WT 55.6 degrees and a pleasant NNW breeze at 10-15 In retrospect,,,stayed with a shallow crank longer than I should have and ran out of daylight, MN is interesting with DNR sampling. There are so many 23+inchers found in Minneapolis. I really am surprised not as many 8s are caught. Otter tail county has had bass sampled that beat the state record which is pretty exciting, but as a whole, MInneapolis has better bass on average. Fiske is fun, but the numbers of 4+ pound bass are not high, which keeps it lower on my list plus getting past the 1-2 pounders and snakes is exhausting. It used to be a great numbers lake of 4+ pounders, but had a bad winter or winters within the past 15 years and the 1 pounder gang took over. I am always on the hunt for new lakes in Otter tail county. It is difficult since every few years, great lakes change. I like this MN forum. I hope some of us team up some time and get on some of these big bass. 3 Quote
geneoh Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Got out for 2 hours this morning, 10am-12pm. Caught two 4lbers, including one that was 4.25 which is a new PB. Pretty stoked. One on a dock off a secondary point and the other on a dropoff weedline. Chartreuse chatterbait and black/blue jig were the baits. Only other fish I caught was a 1.5lber super shallow. WT: 54. 3 Quote
FishingMN Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 water temp 57to60 around some lakes metro area Quote
Tlauz Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Got out from 11:00 - 5:00. Fished a small shallow lake connected to a larger deeper lake. Got 9 bass in first 2 hours. Then moved to bigger lake and proceeded to catch 4 in four hours. Biggest were 17.5 and 17 inches. First 8 came on Strike King Swim Jig, 1 on KVD 1.5. The last 4 were all on a DT 10. Water temps ranged from 49.1 to 51.3. Calm in the morning and wind picked up in the afternoon. Another day when I left fish to find more fish and was too stubborn or dumb to go back to what worked. When you were using the DT10 I imagine you were just outside the weededge? Or were you still knicking the weeds? Is the lake that clear that the weededge is past 10 feet? Quote

I was fishing outside weed edge. This lake has a lot of sharp drops. I tried to let wind blow me down the drop off and I just cast parallel to the weeds. I did catch a lot of weeds, but if I wasn't getting any weeds, I wasn't getting any action. The wind really picked up and I had a hard time staying on a spot. I did try shallower cranks and swim jig, but on the larger lake only got bites on DT 10. Also had a smaller muskie follow. If he would have bit, that would have made the day a bit more fun. 2 Quote
pitchin fool Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 I got out with my buddy again for a few hours this morning. We tried a new lake that neither of us had ever been to before. So much of the lake looked wonderful, but nobody was home at most of the spots. I managed to pick up 4 bass with nothing to write home about for size, but my buddy managed to pick up a hog! Good thing, too cause it was his only fish of the day! She went 5-11. Next time we will go for a later outing hoping the lake warms up a bit while we are there to get the bite going sooner. Seems no matter where we go lately, we always get at least one giant! 3 Quote
Fiske Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Tlauz I was out Saturday too from 2 until to a liitle after dark. WT 54-55 Early on, picked up an 18 incher slow rolling a spinner bait on the outside edge of the 9' green and my optimism soared. 4 hrs later,,, on a lake I know well and after trying both vertical and horizontal presentations in the high percentage spots,,,it was the only fish I caught or had on for that matter. In regards to the 18 though,,,it was a honker. So much so that I intially tried to stretch another inch out of it on the bump board. It weighed in at 4 lbs! well,,,actually 3.95 give or take a couple of hundreds. 1 Quote
punch Posted October 18, 2016 Posted October 18, 2016 I went out last Friday in the nasty wind and had a heck of a night. Went to a few of my marked out weedlines and tossed crankbaits and chatterbaits and the fish were going nuts. I was the only boat on the water and keeping boat position was a huge PITA, but it was worth it. Caught easily over 25 fish in a few hours in like 5-12 feet of water on moving baits. Caught a 29" pike as a bonus. I also found a few pieces of structure that was holding crappie schools, so I tossed a marker buoy and fished a dropshot + gulp minnow and caught a dozen of them. That was really fun. Kept a few and had a fish fry last night with the wife/kids. Funny thing is I went out Sunday morning on the same lake, and it was dead calm and sunny and I fished the exact same spots with the same baits and got WAY less bites. 1 Quote
Fiske Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Tues PM,,, Wonder if shimmy recognizes this one??? before,,,,during,,,and after Anway,,,another pike bite although smaller on average then week before last ,,biggest around 26, Super aggressive,,,had one bite off with mono, another with braid but that one was in the boat, and a cut off for the cooler because it took the plug so deeply I did lose a nice bass,,,maybe a 17-19 incher, that hit a crank right by boat side and with no hook set went down and was gone. Half hour later, off a different shore,,,had a heavy fish strike hard and then go down and dirty for x # of seconds before getting off. Probably a big pike? Chatter Bait had skirt and 3" grub pulled down the hook shank but no tears so who knows. At sundown a lot of surface activity with bass harassing schools of baitfish feeding on midges, Took three 14-16" before dark and more approaching weather clued it was time to leave. TEMP Air-- 52 degrees Water-- 54+ Depth-- 6-10 in and on the outside edge of the green October Rain-- colder than a witch's kiss 2 Quote

If that was Crooked, that's a pretty good crappie for out there. Most of them I've caught in past were tater chips and you could just about see through them. That lake has long been known for it's bass and gators. Panfish have always been small. Always hoped they'd size up but I've never caught any worth keeping. Quote
punch Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 Was on Lake George actually. The fall bite has been pretty good there! Quote

We must have missed each other by one day. I was there Wednesday. Was a tough bite. The northern were on fire! Top three bass were a 4.13, 5.3, and 5.4. About to head out fishing so i will give a better report in a bit. Trying to do this with my phone is difficult. Haha, pictures sideways. Will have to fix later when my computer has internet! By the way, i might take off Saturday afternoon. If you wanna fish in the AM from your boat, let me know. If i fished from mine, i would have to charge the batteries and woulf be too late for me to take off in the evening and then i would have to leave back to wisconsin on Sunday. Tight lines fellas. 4 Quote
Tlauz Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 Got out for last time. Fished 4 hours. 7 bass, 1 pike. Water temp 44-47. Dropped off boat to be winterized and stored. Caught all fish on Rapala in pic. This bass was 16.5 inches and had two big gashes on both sides (the other side was worse). If you looked closely you could see the bite pattern. The second pic is a bass my son caught earlier this year that also had a cool bite pattern on it. I'd like to catch whatever tried to eat these 2. 2 Quote

Beauties! Unfortunately can't make this morn but will be in the area around 1 pm. Arrived at the P.A. at 1:15 Since you weren't there decided to give your 5 lbers a chance to recoup so they'd be push overs later on in the week. But getting back to the lake,,,yeah,,,if you were in the area it would be one you'd probably hit,,,quite a coincidence especially since it's the first time I've fished it this year. The other problem I see is that I'm pretty sure the shoreline/structures pictured behind you don't exist on this lake. What's the max depth of the lake pictured? geneoh Posted October 25, 2016 Posted October 25, 2016 Fished Medicine lake for the first time today. Only caught one bass, a decent one around 3 pounds and a good amount of northerns. Had a bunch of big northerns follow up my bait but not strike. Anyone have any advice for Medincine lake? I hear people say it's good for bass, I couldn't find them though. WT: 53-54 Quote

However,,,my progression as a bass fisherman in the last 3 years or, more importantly. lack of progression the previous 35 is no doubt a topic for another forum, 1 Quote
