mrmacwvu1 Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 have ever caught a big bass on. Mine was a trout magnet that I was fishing a deep hole that I knew held some big browns. I ended up hooking into a 20 inch smallie. I have also caught some big bass on small inline spinners while pan fishing. Just was wondering what some of your big catches have been on using small baits. Quote

Super User scaleface Posted May 23, 2016 Super User Posted May 23, 2016 Yellow 1/16th ounce marabou crappie jig . Bass was in the 6 to7 lb range . Quote
avidone1 Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 just today I caught a 2.5 lber on a really small rapala floating minnow. I was actually just playing around in my kayak with my ultra light gear catching big bluegill and small bass, when the chunky one took a bite. Quote
Kyhokie Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 6 1/2 largemouth on 1/8 oz renosky super shad. It was when I was a kid and I still have that lure. 1 Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 I have caught several biggun's on the Aile Goby by Yo Zuri. Tiny little lure that catches everything in sight. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted May 23, 2016 Super User Posted May 23, 2016 I caught my first 20 inch smallmouth in 1969 on a small popping bug on a fly rod. I was into tiny crank baits for smallies many years ago and caught several big smallmouth on a Rapala mini fat rap which is about 1.5 inches long. Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted May 23, 2016 Super User Posted May 23, 2016 About 30 years ago we were vacationing in Florida staying at a condo complex and they had a pond with some bass in it. We bought a Zebco combo for me to fish with and I was tossing 2" yellow grubs. All I remember is casting out and thinking I had snagged something. When I yanked back to free it, all heck broke loose. I managed to land it and the local pond expert (I was 12ish and this kid was younger than me) eyes bugged out at the fish. I wish I truly knew how big it was, but it was probably a 20"+ fish. I was just a young kid happy to catch a big fish. Funny how the memory came back once I saw the topic. Hadn't thought about it in a long time, but man I can still remember the feel of that hookset. Super User Raul Posted May 23, 2016 Super User Posted May 23, 2016 6 lbs with a Mepps Black Fury 00 size. Quote
TheMainah Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 Caught a 1 pound smallmouth on a 1/2 inch fluke, just dangling it to get some panfish under a dock. I was like 10 then. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted May 23, 2016 Super User Posted May 23, 2016 5.10 on a 4.5 inch roboworm on a size 1 hook Quote
smr_hga Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 I caught my PB on a 1/16oz 1.5in beetle bou bucktail jig. Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 My second biggest bass came on a 2 3/4 inch trd while skipping docks two months ago. It weighed in at a whopping 8.2 pounds with at least a pound of eggs stuffed in its fat stomach. And my pb of 10.3 ate a strike king bitsy tube sight fished on its bed. I have found that nearly any bass, no matter the size, will eat small baits fished in front of there faces. Big bass won't move very far for them, but they do eat tiny baits. 3 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 23, 2016 Super User Posted May 23, 2016 My biggest bass on a small bait was in 2012, it was a 5lb. 3oz 21.5" smallmouth taken on a 1/32oz marabou jig with a size 4 Eagle Claw Laser Sharp black platinum hook on 6lb line. We normally catch 3lb to 4lb smallmouths with this technique in the winter and the previous best for me was a 4lb 12oz that was 21" even. You never have to worry about bending a hook with the right set up, if you bend hooks out they means either the rod, reel, line, or all of it is too heavy or you are applying more pressure than is required, a properly set drag will allow you to use larger tackle and not bend hooks. 1 Quote

This is not mine, but my fishin' buddy caught an 8 lb largemouth on a crappie tube jig, trolling. I guess the reason I don't catch bass on tiny baits is because I'm always fishing for bass. A small bait to me is a Hula Grub. 1 Quote
mrmacwvu1 Posted May 23, 2016 Author Posted May 23, 2016 thanks for the response I have always wanted to try for Peacocks can't wait till this fall 2 Quote
I.rar Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 Fall can be a tough time for peas but definitely do-able. Good luck! Eventually I will be moving out of Miami but hopefully not out of the peacock zone. I'll need to do some studying to see how far north they've gone. Quote
