pablobear8 Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Hey, I'm a nooby fisherman from Chicago/Midwest. I fish mainly ponds and the DuPage River and want some advice on what lures to buy to be versatile and get the most practice... I'm planning on ordering stuff from bass pro shops or going to Dick's in person since I have a lot of discounts there. My budget is $50 or less preferably but money isn't that big of an issue... Here are the lures I plan on getting and I plan on fishing dirty water if you guys could just help me by telling me what would be a good color to get, weight, and how to fish it simply that would be great. z-MAN ORIGINAL CHATTERBAIT Color: Weight: How to fish? for this I assume a dark color like black/blue brown/black and weight 1/4 oz. I mainly fish in shallow water and would like to be versatile though if I go to lakes. STRIKE KING RED EYE SHAD Color: Weight: How to fish? assuming firetiger would be good and 1/4 oz. for size... to fish it do you just reel like a regular squarebill and you can change up your retrieve Jig Color: ??? Weight: ??? How to fish? ??? No idea on how to use jigs and what jigs to use reccomend me a good one please. Frog Color: ??? Weight: ??? How to fish? ??? Need recommendations I've heard that booyah has good frogs but I don't know much Hula Popper Color: ??? Weight: ??? How to fish? ??? need reccomendations lastly, i'm going to also buy some BPS XPS lures so I can practice with throwing out cheaper lures as well. I've had most of my success with squarebill/wacky senko and am going to continue to use them but more advice would be a great help thank you. Quote

Super User Cgolf Posted May 22, 2016 Super User Posted May 22, 2016 For River fishing I use the Ned rig a lot, I prefer 1/2 Zinkerz over the TRD, but both work well. I have also caught a ton of fish on the smaller 2.5" yum Crawbug. I generally fish it on a slider head, but have used a round head jig too. With the crawbugs I put some gel scent in the hollow body, and it really seems to help. I do also put gel scent on the Ned rig. Quote

For the Crawbug I use the 2.5" in crawdad color (green pumpkin top and orange bottom) on a 1/8 oz jig. On the river you cast out and work if back slowly over the bottom allowing the current to bounce it along. If eddies are available on the river, cast into them and bring your bait across the current. When reeling in don't give up on the retrieve in gnarly current, because smallies will hold in this current in washouts or by rocks where there is dead water, but they can poke their head up and grab an easy meal. It will snag up on rocks, but you can pop it loose most of the time, and many times you will get hit right as it pops loose. You will lose your share of jigs if you fish this a lot, so go with cheaper jigs with decent hooks. You may have to experiment with jig weight a bit for your river. The goal is to contact bottom, but not to snag up every two feet. You also don't want it never contacting the bottom. For the Ned rig I use a 1/16 oz jig for my waters. Personally I would go with the Crawbug, they are cheap (3 bucks for 8 and are even available at Wally World) and don't have the handling issues that Zman baits have to start off with. Green pumpkin Texas red and black neon also worked well for me. The only thing I will say is the larger size crawbug was a bust for me, I think the smaller one matches the hatch better for the river system I fish. Once you really get into river fishing, the Zman stuff has a lot of pluses, but not to start out with. Scent can be optional, but I am a big believer in it and use it on almost all my baits. Quote
