freelancer27 Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Hi guys, I am in the market for frogging combo that I also could occasionally use for inshore fishing. I would like to stay within 300 USD for the set. I would like to operate the reel with 50pound test braided line. Some reels that I have looked at online (high gear, left hand retrieve): * Daiwa Coastal 200HS * Daiwa Tatula Type-HD * Shimano Curado 200 Rods: (If possible I would prefer a shorter rod, since I am a bank fisherman and with a long rod its harder to walk the dog with a frog.) * Dobyns Fury Casting Rod 7'3" Mag Heavy Would love to hear your thoughts on this and maybe you have some proposals? I am planning to buy during the Memorial Day sales. Thank you all. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted May 20, 2016 Super User Posted May 20, 2016 Targetting what sort of fish inshore? To me, inshore fishing would be for redfish, speckled trout and flounder, and I can't envision a froggin' bass rod working well for those inshore species. Quote

But you never know what is gonna bite .. I am just doing bank fishing here. So nothing really from a boat. Quote
Yudo1 Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 I always use medium or mh rods for inshore because I throw soft plastics on lighter jig heads. I don't throw anything heavy enough to use a mag heavy rod. As far as reels, the zillion coastal looks sweet. Quote

I went out and cought a 50 pound sting ray with my Shimano Expride Ex Heavy and the Lews BB2 Inshore (on 25 pound Big Game) the other day. This rod and reel is great, but I am looking for something lighter now, with a faster tip that should help me to walk frogs better and have a bit more feel. At this point I am considering going with the following reel: Shimano Curado I Casting Reel And for the Rod theese are options I am considering: * Genesis II Cast Rod 7'5" Fred's Magic Stick * Lew's TP-1 Speed Stick IM8 Cast Rod 7'3" Heavy * Lew's Custom Speed Stick Rod 7'4" Heavy Mag Pitchin * Dobyns Fury Casting Rod 7'3" Mag Heavy I would really love to understand how much those rods weigh, but not even on the company's homepage I can find that info for some (Dobyns for example). Weight is important to me, since frogging is requires a lot of movement of the combo and tires you out quickly if the set up is too heavy. What are you guys thinking? Quote
I.rar Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 I'm never hesitant to email any company asking for rod weights. A lot of the time they answer quickly. What baits will you be using in the salt? Quote

What baits will you be using in the salt? Yeah, that would be an option. I just do NOT understand why this is not clearly called out in the specs (on TW or at last on the company homepage). For Saltwater I was planning to not throw anything heavier than 1.5 ounces. Hair Jigs, spoons, jerkbaits, spinners. Though the ratio of me using it vs freshwater would probably be around: 90% freshwater (bass) vs 10% inshore. Thanks for your help! Quote
freelancer27 Posted May 22, 2016 Author Posted May 22, 2016 Ok, I narrowed it down to the following: Reel: * Shimano Curado 200 I 7.2:1 * Daiwa Coastal 200HS 7.3:1 Rod: * Lew's Custom Speed Stick Rod 7'6" Heavy Mag Frog * Okuma Scott Martin TCS Casting Rod 7'3" Heavy * Genesis II Cast Rod 7'5" Fred's Magic Stick Line: * Berkley Trilene Professional ( not sure if I should go with 50 or 65 pound). Would be super happy about feedback on this! Thanks again. -Seb. Quote
Fishin' Fool Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 I'd keep the Daiwa Tatula 7'4" heavy frog rod in there too. If you research the reviews it gets good reviews. It retails for $150 but you can find it for $120. Match that with the Daiwa reel...boom! 1 Quote

Burtonxj Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 I use a M/F for 75% of my in shore fishing..maybe check out some of the M/H St. Croix rods. They run on the heavier side. Quote
