Preytorien Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Excellent. You'll love the low profile of the self inflating vests. It's Coast Guard approved, and should definitely hold your weight. Just make sure you wear it. Every. Single. Time. 3 Quote

Mine went off twice, don't think I'm buying another re-arm kit! 1 Quote

Get yourself a Mustang H.I.T model instead, they need to be submerged to go off so fishing in the rain isn't a problem. Quote

For the price I paid for the vest & re-arm kits I've been highly disappointed with auto inflate vests. I've had a Onyx & a BPS pop; my brother had his Onyx pop sitting on the floor in the back of the boat. Quote

I heard a bunch of horror stories too when I was looking into getting an automatic vest. That's why I decided to go with one with the H.I.T technology. It has to have hydrostatic pressure to fire. No matter how wet it gets, it won't go off until fully submerged. I can attest to the fact it won't as I've fished in many downpours with it on and it's still never went off. It might be worth looking into, even with the higher initial cost and higher re-arming cost, I think it works out to be cheaper in the long run because you don't have to worry about accidental discharges. 1 Quote

BUT i did drop it in the floor of the kayak when i went to take a sweatshirt off and it went off from the water sitting in the cockpit area! Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 23, 2016 Super User Posted May 23, 2016 As a teenager I grew up water skiing so I'm comfortable wearing my O'Brien! @Ghostshad sorry I didn't mean to still your thread! Quote

Yea, this is what I use. I decided that when kayak fishing I might as well buy a really good very right off the bat, so I got their best one. Then I started reading about the H.I.T. technology and I was glad I went that route. I also have fished in heavy rain, and gotten plenty of paddle splashes on it without inflation. 1 Quote
Ghostshad Posted May 23, 2016 Author Posted May 23, 2016 I bought it,i will wear it if it rains i've got rain gear. But one problem i do have is i hang my rod handle in the opening, but it beats drowning. And my wife didn't fuss about me buying it,she says she fells safer now that i got it & i wear it. If it sounds like i'm getting Smart about what i said ,i'm not at all . Thanks for your help,if i have a problem i'll try to upgrade later. GodBless 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 24, 2016 Global Moderator Posted May 24, 2016 I had an auto Mustang that went off on me 3 different times from either rain or humidity. I sold it and bought a manual. That was several years ago so hopefully the problem is fixed because there's obviously some serious benefits to the automatic ones. Quote

GodBless wear it over your rain gear or it might not inflate properly! it was raining hard on me on Friday for the ~7 hours i fished with mine on and never had an issue with it... Quote
THE_Vue's Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 This thread reminds me to check my PFD and see if everything still in good shape. I've got the Onyx too but forget how long before you must replace the kit. Quote
