Whopper Plopper

Been hearing a lot about the lately but have not seen one in person in order to form an opinion.  Curious to know if this bait is the real deal or is it another gimmick to never be heard from again like the Laser Lure.

For the folks who use these, what color and sizes do you prefer and when you do you find them most prodictive.

I have a couple. One in the loon(black) color and the other in bone color.  Both are the 90 size. Used the black one last night. It was the first time using either and I only caught one, but I still think it's a little early here for the top water bite to be completely on. I'd read they cause line twist and they weren't joking. I won't throw one again without a swivel. I didn't have the problem of the rear treble getting tangled with the tail as I had also read about happening.  I think Chris Lane was burning them up with one last weekend at Toledo Bend. I'm anxious for warmer weather to get here so I can get a better impression of how they produce because I've heard nothing but good things.

The 130 size won't spin in the water like the 90 size tends to do at higher speeds. I really like them since they are basically a buzzbait that can be paused. Only thing is they are not as effective fishing in heavier cover like a buzzbait can do. Best used on the edge of cover for drawing stuff out. Not a gimmick though, very effective when used right.

The Whopper Plopper isn't going anywhere. Chris Lane just used it to take second at Toledo Bend.

Do you guys fish them like a buzz bait or do a stop and go retrieve? I just bought a couple tried the 90 had a missed strike buts it's still early here for top water

I use a steady, straight retrieve mainly.

Both sizes catch fish...all colors seem to produce...and I mainly use a steady retrieve...if you start to get a lot of missed strikes try it with a couple pauses.They seem to usually hit it on the pause or right after.. worked for me.  All around its a good bait.

Anyone see Larry dahlbergs show when he uses the massive ones to fish for wolf fish. Those are the scariest strongest blow ups I've ever seen and he's using it in a little creek. I also like the 90 size in loon but for me I've almost always preferred little to no sound and would rather throw a weedless ribbit, hollow body or spook. As Blue basser said above. This isn't going anywhere and IIRC is one of the top producers in the river to sea lineup.

i don't have one, but i've seen my buddy's in action.  i like it because it's almost like a buzzbait that you can pause and then carry on with the retrieve without it sinking to the depths!

 Would like to use the 90 size. Does the whole lure spinning spook the fish, or just twist the line?

Don't even use buzz baits anymore. When I want something that'll wake the dead and keep me awake it's the Plopper.

Whopper Plopper is legit, buy with confidence!  If they stopped making them today, the ones out there would be worth a pretty penny!

I wouldn't say it's a gimmick. It's a proven musky lure, just downsized for bass, I've had one for about 2 years now. When my buddy and I go night fishing, we throw that and a black buzzbait, about equally effective.

This is what I love about this bait. I can retrieve it at as fast or as slow as I want, and I can pause it in the strike zone, give it a few jerks in there if I want, etc. Very versatile topwater bait.

I throw my 130 on my frog rod, 7' 3" H/F with a 7.1 reel and 50lb braid. Some of the most vicious topwater strikes I've ever seen are smallies crashing into this thing.

I just caught my first fish on it yesterday. it was the size 90 in Loon. Used a 7'0 Med Moderate Avid X with a Chronarch 50e and 10lb mono. It was around 3# and hit it so hard I jumped.
