Looking at the 7' medium heavy models for squarebills and lipless, anyone used either? Haven't found many reviews on the avid cranking series but I love my regular avids.

the MH MODERATE cranking rods are the way to go in my opinion with St. Croix..

I had a 7'2" Medium Moderate and it was just way too flimsy for a crankin' rod (small cranks fine but it was tough for me to find a crank to match up perfectly)

was yours a avid?

I have a loomis GLX 785 CBR.  Amazingly good crankbait rod.  I will say that they run a little soft in my opinion compared to the rest of the Loomis catalogue.  I originally bought a 783 and returned it for my 785.

I was looking at the poor boy gloomis crankbait series, I'd like to have a glx but no?. I mainly am looking for a mod-fast graphite rod like these two are described. Never really liked the noodly Fiberglas feel

I'll gladly take an Avid over any Loomis in the ~$200 range, and I own both.

I own quite a few of both in that range, but I feel like crankbait rods are a whole different animal. I've never had nothing but cheap cranking rods

Your looking at quality rods.  Neither is inherently 'better' at this level.  it's pretty much a matter of how it feels to you.  I suggest you go to the shops in your area and put them in your hand.   don't be afraid to look at rods that are not labled as "crankbait" rods.  When I go rod shopping it's like a ritual.  I only use loomis or st Croix because I have never found a rod of thiers that I didn't love.  but that's the key.  I put all kinds of rods in my hand.  I shake em, toss em around a bit.  swish em, and put them back and go try another, but I usually "know" the right rod.  it speaks to me.  Trust your gut.   I haven't bought a rod in many years unless I LOVED how it felt in the shop

For just a couple bucks more, I recommend the Dobyns Champion cranking rods more than any other cranking rod on the market.

Check out tackletour.com (review archives). They have a detailed review of the St. Croix Avid MHM rod.

I have the Avid MM, take caskey_b's advice and go with the MHM, I have that roed in the Legend Extreme and is a very sweet and versatile rod, great crankbait rod, the med is like he said, just to noodly, but I love the MHM it's one of my favorite rods

There's no where around that sales loomis or st criox cranking rods above the mojo series. I may go with the loomis because they have more options if I decide to get a additional rod in a bigger size. I strongly prefer cork grips or I would go with the legend tourney series

I thought I was using a avid 7mm for a year for dt10's. But after I ordered a mhm avid x I figured out that I didn't have a MM and already had a MHM.  The mhm seems pretty light but works great

LTBs have cork grips?

I have an avid mhm cranker and it's an awesome rod, I wouldn't go to a mm IMHO.

I have an avid mm and love it.  I've never tried the mhm to see how it compares.

Are you talking about the GLoomis E6X and the Avid X? Ive handled both of those rods/compared them in store and they are both extremely nice rods. But If I was to choose one I would go with the Avid X just because it has some awesome guides. Otherwise Id go with the E6X because I like full cork (but the original Avid has full cork if thats the one you're talking about)

Both of them in medium moderate feel more like a medium/light action so be aware of this. They'd be great for smaller crankbaits like the 1.0 square bill size

I have a couple of the Loomis CBR845's and love them for just about everything but the deepest of divers (DD 22's and such), and even then they will work for those in a pinch. I even like fishing traps in open water with them. Grass is a different story though.

Sorry for the late reply, I hope I can still be of some help. While I haven't thrown any of the D10's with it, it's a great rod for Deep Lil N's which are a similar size plug, just a tad lighter.  As far as square bills go I love them for the KVD 1.5's and the 2.5's. The 1.0 are a tad small for my liking on this rod. My favorite plug to throw with them is a good ol' DD 14. The DD 22's are bit much. Again, this is just my opinion, YMMV...
