What are wire leader and snells?  What are they used for?  When are they good to use?  Are they necessary?

Wire leaders for toothy creatures. I've never used one.  I suppose if you're targeting pike or musky but I don't.   A Snell wraps up the shank of the hook and through the eye.  I snell flipping hooks.  If you tie it right it helps set the hook and it's really strong

If you are running a straight shank up against a sinker use a Snell. The hookup ratio is tremendous.
