I lost two quality fish today.  both losses were due to knot failure.  Oddly enough it wasn't the braid to leader connection but rather the leader to lure.

this is unheard of for me.  In my decades of fishing I haven't lost a fish or lure due to knot failure in many years.  I usually use the palomer and trilene knots with total confidence.  The difference today was that I was using 25 lb. fluorocarbon leader.  I have never used line this heavy and stiff.  I have to believe that this contributed to the knot failure although I'm not sure why.  It did seem as if the knots weren't laying right, but I tied them the same as always.

I asking those of you who use braid and leader to tell me which knots your using.    I'm kinda stunned about todays results

Do you usually tie a Palomar with fluorocarbon?

That's one of those knots that has to be tied
perfectly or else it cuts in to the FC and will snap.

If I use FC leader, I'll tie a clinch knot with about
6 wraps, or a 6-7 wrap uni knot.

If I'm fishing a non-weedless hook, I sometimes
tie a snell.

Agreed that the Palomar has to be tied perfectly to work well with floro.

I've been using the clinch and was doing too many wraps, and have since moved to the uni knot for any floro to lure connections. I use the Alberto for braid to leader.

I use a braid to leader a lot. Usually 20lb braid to 12lb fluoro. I use the FG knot to connect them and with that knot the first point of failure besides a nick in the line is the knot to the lure itself. For tying the leader to the lure I usually prefer either an imporved clinch knot or a uni knot. I find that the Uni is less prone to burning the fluoro than the improved clinch so I stick with that for the most part.

I use the Alberto knot on my braid to fluoro.

Braid to lure I use a Palomar knot.

Fluoro to lure I use a San Diego Jam knot.

I see you have been fishing for many years and I'm sure you know but I will add for all the younger anglers reading.....

all knots should be well lubed (saliva) and cinched slowly as not to burn (damage) the line.

I use an improved clinch and have no issues.

I use 25lb Yo-Zuri Fluorocarbon leader material and it hasn't failed on me yet. I use a clinch knot to tie leader to hook. With line that thick it is hard to pull all the way tight, so I hold the hook with pliers and wrap a t-shirt around the hand that's pulling the line. For me, the Palomar knot is only for braid.

Two extremely important factors mentioned here!

Do not let your line cross!

Do not cinch your half knot down!

If your Palomar knot fails it is due to operator error!

16/20 also know as a Duncan Knot or Pitzen Knot.

i can tie a palomar knot no problem, but i've been using a uni knot on fluoro as of late and have had zero issues with it and feel like i'm not "burning" the line when i cinch it down.

I've found for the first time this season that my 6 (and 7) turn improved clinch knots with Yo-Zuri 8# and 12# are slipping when I tighten them down.  I've NEVER had an issue in the past.  I don't know if YZ has gotten a little slicker or what, but after 40+ years with improved clinch, I've switched to Trilene (improved clinch with extra run through the eye) and I'm practicing SD Jam.

I've always used the SDJ for flouro and it has never failed me. However I've been messin with the so called "no name" knot that Shaw Grigsby and Gary Klien have made videos about and this thing is fast becoming my favorite. Check out you tube about the strongest flouro knot and you'll see it (I don't know how to post videos on here as I've never tried)

As far as the palomar goes I've always been told, seen and read that if the lines are crossed when you double the line through the eye, that is what will cause a pinch point and it will fail.

exceelent stuff here.  I see what I doing wrong......My palomer might have been x crossed because I never checked it.  but my clinching was wrong, so I probably did both things wrong.   Funny but it th?&id=OIP.M2cfeb579571624c4dfc24141bde6never mattered with 8-12lb mono, but this flourocarbonitronic stuff is a horse of a different color

so thank you all.....Just so you know I have experience with all the suggested knots except that san diego knot which I will practice.   I use a double uni for splicing  mono to mono with no problems but I have it slip on me with mono to hook.   I used the improved the clinch knot or trilene for years with no problems on lighter mono but found it too awkward to tie with the heavy flouro.   but the paolomer is my confidence knot.   As y'all know, confidence is 90% of the battle in this game.   so learning how to tie the palomer in the exact proper way to avoid slipping and breakage  is the way I'm going to go.   I'll check back in with y'all in the future when I hook into a few more nice sized fish to let youse guys (sorry, I flashed back on my Nah Yawk days) know how it worked out.

Hopefully I'll have some pics.

Keep in mind that larger diameter line usues fewer number of wraps; 25 lb FC use 3 to 4 wraps in lieu of 5 to 7 for 8 & 12 lb FC with a clinch or SD jam knot and lubricate the line before clinching the knot tight.
