avidone1 Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Jigs are a lot of fun to fish, but they don't seem very popular in my part of Florida. I think because the water is generally shallow and the bottoms muddy. Can't speak for places like Kissimmee where there is lots of grass though On 5/10/2016 at 7:49 PM, Kyhokie said: This just in....It ain't the arrow, it's the indian. That being said, fishing expensive jigs is like having expensive golf clubs, in the hands of a novice it really doesn't matter. That being said again I like expensive Jigs and I like expensive golf clubs lolz, pops always told me that you can at least LOOK 10 Strokes better than you are. ? If fishing were just about catching fish then we would all be using live bait. But there is a lot more to it than that. There are many reasons why a person might fish that are about the "fishing" and not just about the "catching" Being outdoors, bonding with friends, and so on. Another is confidence. Using the 'best' can add to that. Another is personal satisfaction. For example I really don't like spinning reels that vibrate or wobble. It's just a thing. Back in the day to get one that had virtually no vibration to it meant spending the really big bucks. Technology has advanced so that a "mid" level reel can give that same feeling. Other's may have different preferences, but while it's absolutely true that you can catch plenty of big bass with a stout cane pole and a live minnow, it's just not how I prefer to do it. (yes, I have done it, yes it is fun, been there done that) Quote
Super User Munkin Posted May 13, 2016 Super User Posted May 13, 2016 So I use and lose a lot of jigs so for me they have to be cost effective. Years ago I could not find the Eakins Jewel Jigs that were my favorite once I moved back from Missouri so I started making them. Now I make 95% of the jigs I fish with because I know what I like. A lot of the heads I personally pour but the ones I use for flippin jigs I bought in bulk with a 4/0 Gamakatsu 5941 hook. Picked up 500 3/8 and 500 1/2oz for like $0.45 each so I am set for awhile. RB 77 Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 Like WRB said the hook is BY FAR the most important aspect for me. A buddy of mine makes custom jigs with Gammy hooks and they are the business! I buy them "naked" and tie my own custom skirts and make my own custom trailers. I buy them in bulk (usually about a 50 count at a time) and he gives me a screaming deal. It helps that I usually come over with some fresh Pelagic fish for him to eat or some of my latest prototype baits for him to field test. Quote
boostr Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 I've used different brands, and nothing compares to Seiberts, inexpensive for top quality. I don't know how Jackal gets away with highway robbery on what they charge their jigs at. I mean they are nice and work, but they definitely aren't better than Seiberts. Quote
Slefler Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 The only jig I need is a Sieberts. Quality- check Pricing-check Pretty-check Durable-check what else could one want? Quote
primetime Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 I just care about having a quality hook and the right kind of hook for the jig as well as the right weed guard etc. Any jig will catch a fish and I do not usually worry about head color, but I do have certain preferences I look for from swim Jigs vs. Flipping jigs. Siebert is the best for prices and having a ton of options to make the jig the way you want it and you can just let him make what you want since he understands why one jig has a certain Line Tie degree etc..I also like how he leaves the weedguards long so you can trim them to your liking..If Seibert Jigs were in local sporting good stores with alll the colors and options at his prices I would never buy another brand jig.... I like the Pepper Jigs since they are only $4 for the swim Jig as one of the better brands off the shelf, same with the Strike King Line of Jigs...The Hack Attack Heavy Cover Swim Jig and Regular Flipping Jig is $5 but worth it compared to your other options most of the time... The only other Jigs I see often are the Terminator Jigs but I consider that a cheaper jig with the VMC hook and the way the head is designed it picks up weeds and for $4 I think it is just an ok Jig..I used to like the Booyah A-Jig with Living Rubber and it was a heavy duty bulky Boo Jig which I actually think is an OK jig as well especially if they are on clearance for a buck.... Whatever happened to Stanley Jigs which is pretty much the only Jig I used growing up...I only see the above mentioned jigs on the shelves of stores and for some reason the buyers never take any risks. Dicks had a lot of AT Jigs come in and for $3.29 they flew off the shelves, but have never seen them since.... Sorry for the ramble.....One Jig I really Like is the BPS Flipping Jig since the Head is slimmer and seems to come through grass really well. I tie the skirt myself after buying it, but I don't really like the hook but that head is hard to find...Strike King used to have a Jig that was just called a Premium Jig that looks identical but they are no longer in production and that jig had a better hook... I guess the moral of the story is stick to Siebert, Great Tungsten prices on worm weights, Lure making jig heads and components as cheap as all the big companies and much better, any color, and his Jigs are Durable and he offers them in weights to fit any situation or to give you something just a bit different which I like...Everyone throws a 3/8 but not everyone uses a 5/8 or 5/16 which maybe helps, at least in my mind.... I tried pouring Jigs and they looked great once I learned a few things after being shown....But for whatever reason, I had hook up ratio problems since no matter how pretty they look, they may not be aligned properly and I would have jigs roll, eyes shut, it was not for me...But skirts are easy to fix and do yourself but I would never trust some random heads on Ebay some guy poured after my experience and I used good hooks, I guess they were just not the right head angle to hook...Jigs look simple, but some of the things top quality jigs offer you don't notice since they hook what strikes... "hamma" Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 I have fished many jigs over the years and arkies were my favorite, hands down,.... with stanleys a close second,.. I got into tying my skirts on so they dont slip, then customizing them even further. but alas, Massacusetts passed a no lead ban on weights and jigs under 1 oz. And I've been reeling about it ever since. Only "cheaper" eco friendly jigs i've found so far are eagle claws, and I dont like them. There are some $6 dollar ones that i tried and were ok but I refuse to commit into buying a hundred or so,.. so i can replenish my arsenal. I can get into some heavy cover at times and tend to loose a few,... Id like to find a eco friendly jig that has the right hooks and bristle type weed guard, with the old arkie style head.,..... My search continues Quote
