A friend of mine only fishes from a Kayak. He loves it and he does pretty good. He has a fish finder that is hand held. It is a small one. He uses it more for the depth than finding fish on it.

I fish out of my kayak quite a bit.  Right now I have a side mounted portable fishfinder that just runs on AA batteries.  I've been looking into buying a nicer one that has the transducer mounting under the kayak with a suction cup and runs on a 12v battery.  I love having a fish finder with the kayak because sitting so low to the water makes reading the water pretty tough sometimes.

It's not too bad.  I think its called the "fishin buddy".  Itd be a good one for knowing the depth and finding dropoffs and all that but I have a feeling its not the best for locating the fish.  It might be something that would work good for you.  "fishin buddy" fish finders start at around $50 and go up from there.  I think I got mine at Cabelas.

I have been fishing out of a kayak for two years now. I have a Wilderness System Tarpon 140. I have a Lowrance X68 fishfinder mounted right in it. Use a thru the hull transduce and the small 7amp 12 volt battery the Cabelas sells. Works great. Check out some of the kayak fishing sites on-line and you can get some great ideas about setting up a kayak for fishing. Check www. Kayakfishingstuff.com best site that I've found.

I have been fishing a 9 1/2 foot recreational Swifty for two years.  I have it rigged to carry three rods and my gear but no finder.  I fish it 4 to 5 times a month in my local lake, and during the summer in the Arizona mountain reservoirs.  I am considering an Eagle 128 portable finder so I can use it in my other boat also.  Check out the kayak fishing stuff site there is a lot of info.
