When tying an Albright or Alberto knot, is the braid always used to tie the knot?  The reason I ask is I tied 8lb. mono to 40lb. braid using the thinner mono to tie the knot and it failed.  I was careful tying the knot and was wondering if the fail was due to using the mono to tie it. I was under the impression that the thinner line was always used to tie the knot, but in the video two different size monos were used.

If the braid is the mainline, I always use it
to tie that knot. Never the leader.

Hope I understand you correctly.

Braid, always.  If it fails when testing, then you did it wrong.  Keep tying, good knots are all about practice.

I always use the braid as well.

I always wrap/tie with braid as well; whether its backing to braid, or braid to leader.  I tie exactly like @lakeannaangler's photo above and have never had a problem.

That must be where I went wrong as I used the thinner mono to tie the knot.

I just started using leaders with braid, but this was the first time I'd used that light of a leader.

The braid will just slip out.  The knot depends on the "weave" of the braid wraps cinching down on the softer mono-filament line.  Keep praticing, you'll get it.  It's never what I'd call an easy knot, but it isn't the hardest.

Look into the Albright Special knot also. It's similar to the one you're using but with less things going on. Easy to tie and strong. Another is the uni/uni knot.

I also suggest trying the FG knot. It can be frustrating at first, but once you tie it correctly, it will never fail.

It's the most difficult knot I use for fishing but it also is an amazing knot and there really isn't anything better that I have found for tying leaders. The only downside really is the ease of tying it. And like others have said, regardless of the knot you use, the braid should always be the line used to tie the knot. In fact that's the only reason the FG knot even works is because the braid is wrapping around the mono or flouro and not vice versa. If you tried it the other way the braid would slip through the wraps with almost zero resistance.

I've found the FG pretty easy to tie, once I got the hang of it. Keep everything under tension, esp the leader main-line, and everything lays down nice and it's quick to tie. I also use a CA glue to lock down the half-hitches.

It's incredibly strong. The leader knot is no longer the weak link as it was with the double Uni's I'd used previously. The reason I switched was the bulk created by other knots getting caught, or damaged, in the rod guides. The FG is practically microscopic and stronger than anything else. Props to whoever came up with it.

That's the biggest thing I like about it, I previously used the double Uni and actually liked it for it's ease of tying and for the diameter leaders I was tying it wasn't too bulky IMO, but I had breakage issues on hooksets. With the FG knot, if you tied it correctly, it will not break, the knot to the lure will first. If you get something hung up and need to break off you can have confidence that that is where it will break, which is nice.

I like the Alberto and always tie the braid.

I've been scared of the FG due to the complexity, but this is the best video I've seen on how to tie it so far. I may give it a go.
