Super User MassYak85 Posted May 9, 2016 Super User Posted May 9, 2016 I know there are a ton of rat lures out there, some of which can get well over a hundred dollars or more. I was wondering if you could only have one large rat bait (let's say 5"+) what would you pick? I've been looking at a lot of them over the past few months and the two that really peaked my interest once I factored in costs were the 50 size Spro Rat ("only" 30 bucks for a fairly large bait) and the Moreau 5" Rat (which has the look of some of the higher end rat lures but is a little bit more sensitive on the wallet than many of the custom ones). Do any of you have experience with either or both of these baits. Thanks. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 9, 2016 Global Moderator Posted May 9, 2016 The Spro is a solid bait and proven fish catcher. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Spro is the best bang for the buck right now. I like the Trap Bass Baits rat personally because it's still somewhat affordable compared to some of the other hand made rat options out there. Quote
ErikmonBillsfon Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 I loved the live target feild mouse and threw it a lot last. Year. Would catch all kinds of fish. Super weedless, great hooks and the smaller size is super easy to walk the dog. I useD it more than any frog last year and cuaght a ton of fish in various sizes. 1 Quote

I believe the rats that the OP is referring to are the large, wake/swimbait style rats, not hollow bodied rats. Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted May 9, 2016 Super User Posted May 9, 2016 I am partial to the Bettencourt Rats- both jointed and non jointed are cool but I prefer the non jointed. Blows my mind when I put it next to a plastic rat (nttiawwt) and they both cost about the same, as the Betty is handmade and absolutely beautiful. It's even held up pretty much perfect after being hit a bunch of times, which is kind of surprising considering the rabbit fur. No idea why more people don't mention them in these rat threads. Well, probably because they never won iCast, which is fair enough I guess haha Quote
Nice_Bass Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 honestly, spro has a good following and is affordable. I prefer a mini slammer for a rat bait though for around the same price point and you can throw it on all types of gear so my SB rods are left free and I can have it tied on at all times. Quote

Correct. And as far as price range I'd be interesting in anything under 50 bucks. Thanks for the replies so far guys. Some neat looking hand made ones mentioned. Quote

blckshirt98 Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 If you can find a CL8 Water Vole or Baby Possum those might be options as well. I use the CL8 Mighty Mouse as my go-to for a smaller mouse sized topwater and it works great! Quote
